NEW DELHI: Flipkart and Amazon have a reason to thank the controversial TikTok. Popularity of the Chinese social media app, which lets people record short videos and post them online, has boosted sales of mobile phone tripods and accessories up to 10 times in a year. Tripods to prop up smartphones while recording videos and other products like mobile holders, connectors and on-the-go cables are selling like hot cakes across ecommerce platforms and retail stores in India as more and more people take to the video-sharing app to showcase their ‘talent.’ Flipkart and Amazon told ET that they’ve seen a huge spike in product categories, with sales sky rocketing to anywhere between 300% and 10 times within a year. More interestingly, higher sales are emanating from small towns and cities said industry insiders, where people use apps like TikTok in the hope of becoming social media influencers, and in turn get money from advertisers to plug in their product in a bid to be … [Read more...] about Why Amazon and Flipkart need to send ‘thanks note’ to TikTok

The Galaxy Fold has been the most polarizing product I can recall having reviewed. Everyone who saw it wanted to play with the long-promised smartphone paradigm shift. The results, on the other hand, were far more mixed. If nothing else, the Fold has a remarkably high Q-Rating. Each person who saw me using the product had at least a vague idea of what it was all about. I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve had that reaction with a non-iPhone device. That’s great from brand perspective. It means a lot of people are curious and potentially open to the notion that the Samsung Galaxy Fold is the future. Of course, it also means there are a lot of people looking on if you fail. In some ways, this past week with the Samsung Galaxy Fold has been an extremely public beta. A handful of samples were given out to reviewers. Most worked fine (mine included), but at least three failed. It’s what we in the industry call a “PR nightmare.” Or at least it … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy Fold review: future shock
The Galaxy Fold is real. I’ve held it in my hands — a few of them, actually. Samsung’s briefing this morning was littered with the things, in different colors and different states of unfolded. A month or so ago, this was anything but a given. After eight years of teasing a folding device, Samsung finally pulled the trigger at its developer’s conference late last year. But the device was shrouded in darkness. Then in February, it took the stage as the Galaxy Fold, but there was no phone waiting for us. Ditto for Mobile World Congress a week later, when the device was trapped like a carbonite Han Solo behind a glass display. With preorders for the phone opening today, ahead of an expected April 26 sale, things were getting down to the wire for Samsung. But this morning, at an event in New York, the Galaxy Fold was on full display, ready to be put through its paces. We happily did just that in the hour or so we had with the product. Once you get over the surprise … [Read more...] about Unfolding the Samsung Galaxy Fold
Google has always been experimenting with its applications, introducing new features from time to time. While many get a green chit and are deployed to the masses, some are pulled up. Adding to the list is a change in YouTube that is being tested by Google. The change comes in the form of moving up of the comments section in a video. Some may see the comments section right below the video so users can easily jump to the conversation. For now, viewers have to scroll down through the entire list of ‘Up next’ videos to reach the particular section. The new user interface shows the three featured comments on top, tapping on which will show the complete section. Those who are witnessing the change will also see a prompt below the ‘Up next’ section stating that the comments section has moved up. “We want to make it easier for people watching videos to find comments in the YouTube app without having to scroll through “Up Next” videos, so … [Read more...] about Google is testing this new visual change in the YouTube app

Box versus dongle If you want to spend $70 on a Google Cast device, you'll be looking at the Chromecast Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi Box. Andrew Martonik 22 Dec 2016 16 Google's new Chromecast Ultra brings a lot to the table — not the least of which being 4K HDR streaming — but it is also unfortunately double the price of its predecessor. At $70 the Chromecast Ultra is now closer to the price of full-on Android TV boxes — including the newest of the bunch, the Xiaomi Mi Box, which also conveniently costs the same $70. Both offer 4K video support, are of course Google Cast targets and won't take up much room behind your TV, but that doesn't mean you should blindly choose one or the other. Some people will prefer the Chromecast Ultra's simplicity while others will enjoy the extra features of the Mi Box. Which is right for you, though? Read on to find out. Size and placement considerations … [Read more...] about Chromecast Ultra vs. Xiaomi Mi Box: Which should you buy?
