Marvel Studio’s latest film Captain Marvel rolls back the years and takes us to a simpler time: the 90s. Set to release early next year before the highly anticipated Avengers 4, Captain Marvel focuses on the origin story of its titular character with the aim of easing the character’s transition into the next Avengers offering. The film’s trailer gives us an exciting look into what to expect from the film. It gives us a glimpse into the origins of Carol Danvers (the alter-ego of Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson), a military pilot who finds her life completely changed after her spaceship crashes on an alien planet. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab where I had just started as a postdoc, and I was pleased that I had managed to follow most of the discussion. I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad. A professor I had met at a conference agreed to give me a position in his lab. It all seemed so easy—until I actually started. In a new lab and a new country, I struggled. She's a Wonder. Forget the invisible-jet-flying Wonder Woman from the delightfully cheesy SuperFriends cartoon. Fans met an entirely new heroine in the 2017 blockbuster feature simply called Wonder Woman.Sadly now we have to wait even longer for the sequel, as Gal Gadot announced Monday that it has been pushed back to June 5, 2020.We know the sequel's title will be Wonder Woman 1984, and it's set in the neon-splashed Reagan Era. Two photos released in early June show Diana marveling at some very 1980s TV screens (J.R. Ewing!) and in a possible spoiler, Steve Trevor getting his shopping mall on. (Is this really Steve? How can that be... never mind, it's the movies.) And director Patty Jenkins is very excited about another character, the unidentified man played by Pedro Pascal, star of Netflix show Narcos.
