If you want to know why your heart felt like it stopped a few times while watching the latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, look no further than the episode’s writer, Yahlin Chang. (Spoiler alert: Make sure you watch the June 20 episode of the series before reading this article.) In a second season that has already involved a suicide bombing, lynchings, and a cruelly satisfying Marisa Tomei death, The Last Ceremony plunges the dystopian drama to new depths of depravity. The 10th episode of season 2 has Offred’s false labor set in motion a vicious chain of events that results in her being raped and later being reunited with her daughter, Hannah. Chang spoke with Digital Trends ahead of the show’s airing about how the United Nations helped her write the reunion scene, why she wanted to remind the audience of the extent of that world’s inhumanity, and the joy she hopes to see in season 3. Digital Trends: You’ve written two of the most … [Read more...] about Reeling from the latest ‘Handmaid’s Tale’? We spoke with the woman who wrote it
Wonder woman pregnant
Finally, a plan on how to include pregnant women in clinical trials
Among the stark changes for a woman during pregnancy is what she sees when she opens the medicine cabinet. The medications she wouldn’t have given a second thought to months earlier may now prompt worry and doubt. With any drug on the shelf, she may wonder: Is this medicine safe? Do I need to adjust the dose? Avoid it altogether? An expectant mom with just a cold or a headache will find drug labels suggesting she ask a health professional before use.Turns out, those health professionals are in the same boat as their pregnant patients: There is very little, if any, information about whether many drugs are safe to give to expectant mothers. And that can lead to situations that put fear of harm to the fetus over the health of the mother.Case in point: As a medical resident, bioethicist and obstetrician/gynecologist Anne Lyerly got a call from a friend and fellow resident working at a different hospital. The chief resident there was trying to resuscitate a dying woman who was … [Read more...] about Finally, a plan on how to include pregnant women in clinical trials

A tumor growing on her baby’s heart forced this pregnant mom to make a terrifying choice
Alysha Kellner was 23 weeks pregnant when she learned last year that her baby had a rare, fast-growing tumor on her heart that might require surgery while still inside the womb.It was earth-shattering news that didn't stop there. Fetal surgery to remove this type of tumor had been done successfully just three times in the world and had never even been attempted by Kellner's doctors at Children's Minnesota.Once she got past the initial shock, Kellner swore there was no way she would trust the surgeons to take their first shot at a high-risk procedure on her baby. Then she grasped for hope: Maybe she would make it to 28 weeks, a far cry from a full-term, 40-week pregnancy but far enough along for the baby to be delivered and then operated on after birth. That hope didn't last long. The first sign that something might be wrong had come at 21 weeks, when a routine ultrasound flagged a small amount of fluid around the baby's heart. The Kellners' doctor suggested she follow up with a … [Read more...] about A tumor growing on her baby’s heart forced this pregnant mom to make a terrifying choice
A pregnant woman tripped a 4-year-old boy on purpose. The Internet went crazy.
Amanda Erickson, The Washington Post Published 6:35 am, Tuesday, April 24, 2018 It seems right out of a particularly mean-spirited Groucho Marx routine: A little boy sped through some plastic curtains, knocking them into the face of a pregnant woman eating near the door. The boy was rushing to collect some chopsticks from his parents, who own the spicy hot pot outlet, local media reported. The boy's breezy entrance caused the young woman to spill some food. So as the 4-year-old ran back out the door, the woman stuck her foot out to trip him. The toddler went flying, landing on his belly. Doctors later confirmed he had a concussion. The episode, which took place last Friday in China's Shaanxi province, was caught on security camera. window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: 'thumbnails-c', container: 'taboola-interstitial-gallery-thumbnails-5', placement: 'Interstitial Gallery Thumbnails 5', target_type: 'mix' }); _taboola.push({flush: true}); … [Read more...] about A pregnant woman tripped a 4-year-old boy on purpose.
