Microsoft 's acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been under scrutiny in multiple markets with direct competitor Sony being the "loudest objector" of the deal. The Japanese company has argued that if the purchase goes through Activision's cash cow Call of Duty franchise will become an Xbox exclusive. However, the Windows-maker has rejected these claims saying the games will be available on PlayStation as well. In the latest development, the company's top executive has revealed that Microsoft has offered Sony a 10-year contract to make each new “Call of Duty” release available on PlayStation. He also notes how this offer is consumer-friendly and will help innovation. Currently, the deal is under scrutiny in the US by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Competition and Markets Authority in the UK and antitrust regulators in the European Union (EU). Brad Smith, vice chairman and president of Microsoft, wrote in an article in The Wall Street Journal … [Read more...] about microsoft: Explained: Why FTC ‘killing’ Microsoft’s biggest gaming deal may be a huge mistake

The nationwide wave of demonstrations against the strict zero-Covid policy is considered to be the biggest since the 1989 massacre of Tiananmen Square. It's not confined to the streets, though - the internet is an important battlefield too. Digital protestors are using software like the best VPN services to break through China’s Great Firewall and spread information outside the country's borders. While Chinese authorities might be the most equipped in the field, online censorship is on the rise everywhere across the world. In Iran, for example, the government recently restricted Instagram and WhatsApp in an effort to silence protesters. The same happened in Turkey after the Istanbul blast . According to the latest report from Freedom House , in 2022 two-thirds of the countries analyzed "cut residents off from the flow of news and information … [Read more...] about Meet the tech making online censorship “a very difficult thing to achieve”
A hot potato: Microsoft President and Vice-Chair Brad Smith says that the FTC suing the company to block its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard would hurt competition, consumers, and thousands of game developers. He also compared Sony's objections to the deal to Blockbuster complaining about the rise of Netflix. In a Wall Street Journal guest post , Smith wrote that Microsoft faces huge challenges in the gaming industry. He noted that when it comes to console gaming, the Xbox sits behind the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, and that Microsoft has no presence in the mobile game industry, which generated 50% of the overall global gaming revenue, or $92.2 billion , in 2022. Smith noted that a significant portion of mobile gaming revenue goes to Google and Apple through app-store fees. Acquiring Activision would allow Microsoft, which has a market cap of $1.87 trillion, to compete against these companies through "innovation," apparently. Much of Smith's argument for … [Read more...] about Microsoft compares Sony to Blockbuster, confirms 10-year CoD-PlayStation offer

The hackers reportedly targeted Covid-19 relief funds - US taxpayer money that was meant to help private sector businesses and workers survive the disruptive pandemic. The group that’s being blamed for the taxpayer money siphoning is called APT41, or Wicked Panda, also named Barium by some. A matter of national security This appears to be the first time the US government has publicly acknowledged pandemic fraud tied to a foreign, state-sponsored actor - but chances are, it won’t be the last one, as there are currently more than 1,000 investigations of potential transnational and domestic fraud incidents. “It would be crazy to think this group didn’t target all 50 states,” Roy Dotson, national pandemic fraud recovery coordinator for the Secret Service, told NBC News (opens in new tab) . It’s unknown … [Read more...] about Chinese government hackers apparently stole millions in Covid benefits
For some years now, the tech industry has been transforming the automobile. We often hear that consumers, enamored with their new smartphones, want some of that same functionality in their new car. Less is said about investors who have grown rich from software companies that sell a product and then charge customers a subscription or fee to unlock certain features. They really do want that functionality in their car company investments, so the era of being offered paid upgrades to your car is here whether you want it or not. Today, Polestar announced a power upgrade for owners of the long-range, dual-motor Polestar 2 , whose two motors generated an equal 201 hp (150 kW) for a combined 402 hp (300 kW). That's more than sufficient to make the dual-motor Polestar 2 a quick car, befitting the new brand's stated identity of being focused on electric performance cars. The only problem is those electric Volvos that share the Polestar 2's CMA platform. Both the Volvo C40 and XC40 have … [Read more...] about Paying for a power boost in an EV—good idea or worst idea?
