Microsoft to make it easier for users to switch default apps on Windows 11

March 20, 2023 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Microsoft 's management of app defaults in Windows 11 has received consistent criticism. Compared to Windows 10, the newer operating system complicates the process for users who wish to use third-party applications instead of Microsoft's default offerings. However, that may change soon as Microsoft plans to ease things for those who want to change the default apps on Windows 11. Microsoft, in a blog post, said it is “reaffirming our long-standing approach to put people in control of their Windows PC experience,” announcing the new feature for Windows 11 users that will let them easily control changes to their app defaults. How the new Windows 11 feature will work In Windows 11, if a user prefers not to use Edge as their default browser, they must navigate to the Settings menu and change the default app based on file and link types, which takes up quite some time. But now, Microsoft is introducing a new Settings deep link URI scheme for developers, … [Read more...] about Microsoft to make it easier for users to switch default apps on Windows 11

Windows 11 Is Changing How the Print Screen Key Works

March 22, 2023 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

Microsoft has been hard at work on Windows 11 updates, from more Start Menu tweaks to changes to default apps . Now the company is experimenting with changes to the Print Screen key under Windows 11. There are many ways to take a screenshot on Windows 11 ( and Windows 10 ), but if your keyboard has a dedicated Print Screen key, pressing that will instantly take a screenshot and save it to the clipboard. That has been the default behavior for many years — going as far back as Windows 95 — but Microsoft is now testing something different in test builds of Windows 11. Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23419 is now being tested in the Dev Channel of the Windows Insider program , which now opens the Snipping Tool when you press the Print Screen key, instead of instantly taking a screenshot and saving it to the clipboard. Microsoft says the option can be reverted from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, and if you’ve changed that setting before, nothing will change. … [Read more...] about Windows 11 Is Changing How the Print Screen Key Works

“Acropalypse” Android screenshot bug turns into a 0-day Windows vulnerability

March 22, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Earlier this week, programmer and "accidental security researcher" Simon Aarons disclosed a bug in Google's Markup screenshot editing tool for its Pixel phones. Dubbed "acropalypse," the bug allows content you've cropped out of your Android screenshot to be partially recovered, which can be a problem if you've cropped out sensitive information. Further Reading Google Pixel bug lets you “uncrop” the last four years of screenshots Today, Aarons' collaborator, David Buchanan, revealed that a similar bug affects the Snipping Tool app in Windows 11. As detailed by Bleeping Computer , which was able to verify the existence of the bug, PNG files all have an "IEND" data chunk that tells software where the image file ends. A screenshot cropped with Snipping Tool and then saved over the original (the default behavior) adds a new IEND chunk to the PNG image but leaves a bunch of the original screenshot's data after the IEND chunk. Buchanan says that a version of the … [Read more...] about “Acropalypse” Android screenshot bug turns into a 0-day Windows vulnerability

Microsoft is scaring Windows 11 users with a false security warning – but don’t panic

March 22, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Windows 11 has seen the unwelcome return of an old bug whereby the system is warning that something’s wrong with the security of the user’s PC, when in fact there’s nothing amiss at all. This is a glitch in the operating system’s Security app which reports that “Standard hardware security not supported,” telling the user that their device fails to meet the requirements for ‘standard’ hardware security. Clearly, then, that’s informing you that your PC’s hardware isn’t up to scratch on the security front, visually flagging this with a little yellow warning triangle on the taskbar, as multiple Neowin readers have reported (opens in new tab) . The tech site also uncovered a number of complaints on Microsoft’s Feedback Hub relating to this bug which has been around since June 2022 – apparently resurfacing now. The truth is that there’s nothing wrong with the PC’s security at all, it’s just a bug causing the system to misreport a problem that doesn’t exist. Windows 11 Will Show Account Notifications in the Start Menu

March 22, 2023 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

Windows 11 is always evolving, and now that Microsoft is aiming to roll out features more than once a year , we’re going see changes more frequently. Microsoft is now testing an update to the Start Menu. Microsoft released Windows 11 Build 22621.1483 (KB5023778) to Windows Insiders in the Preview Release Channel. There are a few changes here that haven’t appeared in the other channels yet (like Dev and Canary ), which is a bit strange, considering the Release Preview Channel is supposed to be the final round of testing before a change rolls out to everyone. This update adds notifications for your Microsoft account in the Start Menu, which appear above the Lock and Sign out buttons when clicking your profile picture. The example Microsoft provided shows an alert for backing up your files. Windows 11 already shows similar alerts in the Settings app and notification tray, but now you might see them in yet another place. The blog post explains, “This is only available to … [Read more...] about Windows 11 Will Show Account Notifications in the Start Menu

GNOME 44 Is Here to Make Your Linux PC Better Than Ever

March 22, 2023 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

GNOME serves as the default desktop environment for countless Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu and Fedora . GNOME 44 has now been released, with changes that will show up in upcoming Linux distro updates. GNOME 44 has been under development for the past six months, and most of the work has gone into the Settings app. It’s no easy task to organize all of the options, toggles, and links needed for a desktop PC — as we’ve learned from Windows 10/11 and macOS Ventura . The accessibility panel has been redesigned to be more clear, and new options have been added for keyboard features, over-amplification for audio, and making the scrollbars always visible. The sound panel has also been updated, with volume level controls in a separate window. The Mouse & Touchpad section now has integrated videos to demonstrate each option, plus a new testing window and mouse acceleration setting. GNOME 44 also has improvements to the quick settings menu that was introduced in the … [Read more...] about GNOME 44 Is Here to Make Your Linux PC Better Than Ever

Best Kodi XBMC streaming boxes of 2023: the best hardware for Kodi streaming

August 3, 2021 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Kodi boxes, also known as Android TV boxes, are massively popular. The best models deliver 4K video to your TV and allow you unfettered access to audio and video streams of every format and service. If there's a better, more versatile piece of AV software out there, we've yet to see it. On top of giving you the capability to stream video and music files over a local network, the software also includes the ability to install add-ons to stream from almost any streaming service you could think of, including Amazon Prime Instant Video , Spotify and Netflix. One of the main selling points of Kodi is the fact that it’s supported by pretty much any platform you could think of, up to and including macOS, Android, Linux and Windows. The only real drawback we can think of is that Kodi doesn’t actually manufacture streaming boxes (no, the official Kodi Raspberry Pi case doesn't count), so you need to find your own device to run it on. Luckily, dozens of manufacturers the … [Read more...] about Best Kodi XBMC streaming boxes of 2023: the best hardware for Kodi streaming
