Despite its apparent omnipresence, the internet is only available to around half of the world’s population. Whatever estimate you choose, billions are without the basic internet access we take for granted in more developed countries. This means that, if we are to achieve digital equality, these billions of people will need access. If you couple this with growing interest in the Internet of Things (IoT), and the tens of billions of devices expected to be connected to the internet in the next few years, then the strain on the world’s energy supply will be vast. Hard Fork! Hard Fork? Hard Fork Research has suggested that global internet usage could consume over 20% of the world’s energy by 2030. Any huge expansion in the reach of the internet only works, then, if we can find an almost energy-neutral way of running it. Enter LiFi At a Ted talk in 2011, the University of Edinburgh’s Harald Haas gave a presentation on the technology, claiming boldly … [Read more...] about The future of the internet is… streetlights?
Wifi connects but no internet access
Best answer: No. It can technically work but it's not a good combination. It's optimal to use Google Wi-Fi with a wired switch, or if you don't need the full strength of a mesh network, you could use the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 alone with one of NETGEAR's range extenders. If you need more ethernet ports, consider a wired network switch. It's not quite the best of both worlds When you piece together a component system like a custom PC or a late 80s brushed steel Hi-Fi stereo system, it can feel like everything works if it will fit and the only sacrifices you make come from your wallet. Your home network isn't going to play so well with other components. The problem isn't a lack of standards so much as an overabundance of them. It is possible to use the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900, a traditional wireless router, with Google Wifi, a mesh network, but they will fight each other a bit if they aren't set up in a specific way. The most common setup for using both is to disable the NETGEAR's … [Read more...] about Is the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 (R7000) good for use with Google Wifi?
Most people don't put enough thought into their wireless router. Things like the layout of your house, how it's built, and how many stories it is all matter when you want good Wi-Fi from one end to the other. Or maybe you need to plug something into a router with a network cable in one room but still want great Wi-Fi everywhere else. With so many things to get connected and so many different ways to connect them, having a good home network is important. Naturally, we all want our Wi-Fi to be fast and strong, and we're quick to fuss when it's not. Even when it's our own fault. This is where wireless mesh networking comes into play. Sometimes one central wireless access point that sends out a powerful signal in all directions is perfect. But often a mesh system that can smother everywhere in your home with a Wi-Fi signal is better. There's a big difference between Wi-Fi in your house that works and Wi-Fi in your house that works well. If you've decided to go with a mesh system, you're … [Read more...] about Google Wifi vs. Orbi vs. Eero vs. AmpliFi: Wireless Mesh Network Face-off
Virgin Media has rolled out an update to its latest router that improves the reach of broadband around the home.Intelligent WiFi is available on Hub 3 routers across the country at no extra cost.It independently adapts and evolves to its environment in a bid to tackle performance issues that may arise, such as black spots. The move comes amid an ever-increasing number of internet-connected devices being used in and around homes, with Virgin Media estimating an average of nine per household. Its router update tackles this by refining and optimising the technical features so that connections do not interfere with each other, and ensuring that WiFi is fairly distributed between devices. In addition, the broadband provider has launched a new app that allows people to scan each room to test their WiFi connection and request a booster, which can be plugged into affected areas.Users can access self-help tools within the Connect app and contact customer support through a live messaging feature if … [Read more...] about Virgin Media launches Intelligent WiFi to improve broadband reach
source Business Insider/Eero I tried the second-generation mesh WiFi system from Eero, a startup that Amazon recently bought. The system I tried included a primary Eero router and two smaller routers called “Beacons.” Eero’s second-generation mesh WiFi system delivered stronger WiFi signals and speed than a traditional WiFi router and extender setup usually does. At the same time, major networking companies had also released their own mesh systems when Eero released its second generation of mesh routers that compare with Eero’s performance, and they make Eero’s prices seem high. Back in 2016, I tried the original Eero mesh WiFi system. It delivered fast and strong WiFi throughout my home, even in places that were considered WiFi dead-zones. The Eero devices also proved to be much easier to set up than the traditional WiFi extenders, and they delivered much faster speeds, too. Then, in 2017, Eero came out with new devices that do … [Read more...] about I tried Eero’s $400 WiFi system before Amazon bought the company, and it’s one of the best ways to get fast WiFi throughout your home
