Facebook parent Meta had a rough 2022. The social media giant laid off thousands of workers , reported its first revenue drop and saw a decline in daily active users on Facebook . Now Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the company is focusing heavily on efficiency in 2023 as it continues to invest in the metaverse and artificial intelligence. For the last 18 years, the social network has grown rapidly, but it's entering a new phase, Zuckerberg said. "It's very hard to really crank on efficiency while you're growing that quickly and I just think we're in a different environment now," he said during a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta reported better-than-expected revenue in the fourth quarter. If the company becomes more efficient, he said, Meta will be able to do better product work and become a more fun place to work because employees will get more done. The focus shows how Meta is responding to economic uncertainty as advertisers pull back spending. Meta has … [Read more...] about After Mass Layoffs, Zuckerberg Says Meta Focused on ‘Efficiency’

Blue State Blues: My African-American Education
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) stirred controversy last month when he objected to the contents of the College Board’s new Advanced Placement (AP) course on African-American Studies. Florida law prohibits radical philosophies like Critical Race Theory, which describes America as fundamentally racist, from being taught to children. So he was well within his rights — and seems to have encouraged some improvements . For his trouble, DeSantis has been smeared as a racist and a fascist who is opposed to the teaching of black history — as if “black history” must be whatever the left decides it is. This week, the College Board released its current framework for the AP course — which does include radical ideas such as “intersectionality,” which holds that black people must back other “oppressed” groups, even when doing so is against their own interests. However, the AP framework also includes material on “black conservatives,” which is encouraging (provided their ideas are … [Read more...] about Blue State Blues: My African-American Education

Cash-strapped Twitter to start charging developers for API access next week
In the middle of the night, Twitter made an announcement that disappointed a wide range of developers whose research, bots, and apps depend on free access to the platform’s API to function. Twitter announced in a tweet that starting on February 9, Twitter “will no longer support free access to the Twitter API.” Instead, many developers will have to either pay to access public data or abruptly shut down their projects. Twitter has not yet shared how much its new “paid basic tier” will cost, and the company has only vaguely promised “more details on what you can expect next week.” Thousands of small developers may have to shut down free tools like @ThreadReaderApp or @RemindMe_ofThis, The Verge reported , impacting hundreds of thousands of followers who rely on small developers to build tools that help maximize their engagement with the platform. Entrepreneur and developer Tom Coates joined many developers protesting Twitter’s announcement. Coates tweeted that, while “it is not … [Read more...] about Cash-strapped Twitter to start charging developers for API access next week

Exclusive: CNN Camera Crew Present Outside Mike Pence Group in D.C.
A CNN camera crew was as of Thursday morning present on the street outside former Vice President Mike Pence’s advocacy group headquarters in downtown Washington, DC, Breitbart News has learned. The group is called Advancing American Freedom and has headquarters in downtown Washington, D.C. Photos of the CNN staffers—who had a camera on a tripod there—provided to Breitbart News suggest the camera crew was possibly awaiting action from the Department of Justice (DOJ) or FBI in the ongoing classified document scandals plaguing Pence, former President Donald Trump, and current President Joe Biden. CNN and the DOJ have not replied to requests for comment. Pence officials have previously made clear that staff-led searches have been conducted both at Pence’s home in Indiana and at this organization’s headquarters and that there are no other possible locations to search. The presence of the CNN camera crew raises questions about whether or not the DOJ or FBI are leaking to … [Read more...] about Exclusive: CNN Camera Crew Present Outside Mike Pence Group in D.C.
These malicious apps are tricking Microsoft, and are now after your PC

Getting verified as a legitimate business allowed the crooks to register verified OAuth apps in Azure AD which were, in reality, malicious and used to steal people’s emails via phishing. To make matters worse, Proofpoint said crooks could have also used this access to steal calendar information, as well. Running BEC attacks The threat is particularly worrying as his type of information can be used for cyberespionage, business email compromise attacks, or as a stepping stone towards a more serious form of cybercrime. … [Read more...] about These malicious apps are tricking Microsoft, and are now after your PC
