The public cloud has had a major impact on how organisations of all sizes receive IT services. Some organisations use private clouds, either on-premises or outsourced to a service provider. But with public clouds enjoying widespread adoption, when would you use a private cloud, and are there any advantages in doing so? Can the private cloud keep up with the public cloud providers to offer the kinds of services, security and scale you need? Let’s take a look at cloud evolution and considerations for the future. The first generation of public cloudElasticity and self-service were huge benefits of the first-generation public clouds, which emerged in 2006. Developers could spin up a new application by themselves, quickly and with very little expense on the public cloud. If the application drew more demand, they could scale up the service automatically. The first set of workloads developed for the public cloud were consumer applications such as Netflix and Dropbox. It’s difficult … [Read more...] about Private v. public cloud: Can the private cloud keep up?
Why private cloud
As businesses move more of their operations to the cloud, the need to ensure that your company has the right technology model is more important than ever.Balancing the advantages of public versus private cloud is an issue troubling many a CIO or CTO, however a number of cloud providers are increasingly offering a more flexible solution.ITProPortal spoke to Rackspace EMEA CTO Lee James at the recent Cloud Expo Europe 2018 event in London, where he highlighted just how important this freedom of choice can be for customers."Flexibility is critical,” he told us, “we know that business requirements change, we know that different business units might have different requirements.”"Customers are asking for intimacy - they want to know what cloud mean to me...we know everything about your industry and how it works, so when you walk into a business, you have your ideas already planned out.”“That’s what stands us apart from our competition, the ability for us … [Read more...] about Rackspace: Why freedom of choice is the key to succeeding in your cloud strategy
The cloud is mainstream but that’s old news. Cloud technology has been evolving and introducing better innovative solutions to enterprise requirements. Initially, with Amazon leading the pack, it was just AWS (Amazon Web Services) and S3 (Simple Storage Service). The cloud market has come a long way from there and it didn’t take much time either. I’d say innovation is a lot faster now than it used to be. Before long, cloud storage wasn’t the only solution available. Backup and disaster recovery industries soon followed and now we have a ton of available cloud technologies in the market. The two computing models that I want to explore in this article are: Hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud. Coming out of 2017, these two computing models were the talk of the entire industry. Neither of them is new but the implementation of both of them is now more favorable for the enterprise than ever before. Before discussing the two, I’d like to clarify both of them. … [Read more...] about The integral role of hybrid cloud and multi-cloud computing models for enterprises
Moving to and integrating a cloud strategy is fast becoming the first choice for positive digital disruption. Thousands of British organisations of all shapes and sizes have dared to reimagine their business and are realising the benefits of the cloud. But there are different ways to use the cloud, depending on an organisation’s current situation and future plans. Highways England, the Government company charged with operating, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and major A roads, is using the private cloud to improve journeys for millions of road users. Performing Rights Society (PRS) is using a mix of both private and public – called hybrid. The private cloud is used for its heritage and traditional technology estate whereas the public cloud – in this instance Microsoft Azure – is used for all new applications and will support PRS’s IT strategy to ensure it is agile and flexible for future changes. SMEs are benefiting too, with … [Read more...] about Journey to the cloud: finding the right way
One of the most widely discussed topics in IT today is making the move to the Cloud. Most organizations that consider the journey into cloud computing seek gaining quick access to new services, platforms and toolsets – while stabilizing sprawling IT costs. Cloud may solve many objectives for the right workloads, but I’m hard pressed even as a cloud service provider - and most analysts would agree - to say that every single workload type should move to the cloud. So, what’s the CIO-level roadmap to determine which workloads move when?Executing a migration to the Cloud requires meticulous upfront planning and a thorough understanding of which workloads make sense to move (why), which cloud(s), how and when? Enterprises must determine when and how they will migrate, and strike a balance between what will be managed internally and what will be managed externally through a trusted managed services partner. Each company’s ability to … [Read more...] about CIO’s roadmap to a successful cloud migration
