If you grew up in the suburbs, you recognize it immediately: the sweet, sharp smell of someone mowing a lawn or ballfield. As it wafts into your nostrils, it somehow manages to smell exactly like the color green. But what are we really smelling when we inhale that fresh-cut grass scent? And why do we like it so much? Chemically speaking, that classic lawn smell is an airborne mix of carbon-based compounds called green leaf volatiles, or GLVs. Plants often release these molecules when damaged by insects, infections or mechanical forces — like a lawn mower. Plants manufacture slightly different forms of GLVs depending on what's happening to them, said Ian Baldwin, a plant ecologist and founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. In a 2010 study published in the journal Science, he and colleague Silke Allmann, of the University of Amsterdam, found that tobacco leaves punctured and rubbed with insect saliva released a different bouquet … [Read more...] about Why Does Freshly Cut Grass Smell So Nice?
Why does my ostomy bag keeps leaking
Little girls are told they're made of sugar and spice and everything nice. At least, according to the popular nursery rhyme. But, one Alabama mother is showing they can be whatever they want to be— by capturing stunning photos of girls as both princesses and athletes. Photographer Heather Mitchell told CBS News she was at her 8-year-old daughter Paislee's softball practice in late March and making casual conversation with another mom. Mitchell said to the mother she hoped "Paislee learned to love the game, because she's athletic."The other mother's reaction took her by surprise. Mitchell said she told her that Paislee is "not athletic, she's a girly girl." Later that night Mitchell couldn't sleep, bothered by the comment. "I was thinking why does she have to choose between being girly and athletic," said the photographer. "Why can't she just be both without the judgement of it?" The next morning, she told her husband she needed to shoot some photos of her daughter in … [Read more...] about “Why does she have to choose”: Mom’s photos show girls they can love sports — and be girly
The world's most precise clocks run at a steady pace, messing up by only about 1 second every 300 million years. But the brain takes those rhythmic seconds and makes its own sense of time — stretching the ticks and scrunching the tocks. But why can't the brain keep time like a regular clock? In other words, why does time fly when you're having fun, and why does it plod along when you're bored? How the brain percieves time depends on its expectations. The brain can represent the probability that something is going to occur, given that it hasn't happened yet, said Dr. Michael Shadlen, a neuroscientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. [10 Things We Learned About the Brain in 2018] Every thought has various "horizons," Shadlen told Live Science. In a book, for example, horizons lie at the end of every syllable, the end of every word, the end of the next sentence and so on. Time moves according to how we anticipate these horizons, he said. When … [Read more...] about Why Does Time Fly When You’re Having Fun?
Growing up with ostomy bags in Baltimore, Maryland, fashion model Jearlean Taylor wasn't sure she would be able to pursue her dreams. Now, she's on a mission to inspire others to embrace what makes them different. At only 3 years old, Taylor was diagnosed with a rare vaginal cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma, which doctors didn't expect her to survive. After chemotherapy, radiation and several surgeries, Taylor was cancer-free, but left with two permanent ostomy bags — colostomy and urostomy, which aid her bladder and bowel functions — for the rest of her life.Taylor found it difficult to accept her ostomy bags during her adolescence. She struggled with self-pity, depression and low self-esteem. "I found it hard, embarrassing and painful to be considered 'different,'" Taylor told CBS News. She was teased in school, though she said she "could not blame the kids for what they did not understand.""I remember that embarrassing moment in middle school when my bag burst on the … [Read more...] about Fashion model poses with her ostomy bags to inspire other cancer survivors
