According to IDC, worldwide spending on the technologies and services that enable the digital transformation of business practices and products will reach $1.97 trillion by 2022. But while most organisations agree on the benefits of embarking on the road to digital transformation – including reduced operational costs, consolidated operations, better data analytics and the ability to take products to market faster, among many others – they way each carries it out varies greatly. For some it means shifting workloads to the cloud, while for others it’s about digging deeper into data analytics, giving employees more options for mobility or automating more processes. But one thing’s for sure: no matter what each digital transformation strategy looks like, their network is going to be either the hero or a hindrance to their digital transformation efforts. In order to prepare your network for digital transformation, it has to be both customised to fit your … [Read more...] about Preparing your network for digital transformation

Vodafone will turn on its 5G service in the UK on 3 July with the help of equipment by Chinese telecoms provider Huawei. 5G is an evolution of current network technology, 4G, and will enable download speeds between 10 and 100 times faster than current rates. Vodafone is the first to put a date on its 5G roll-out - a service which it says will cost of both business and consumers the same as using a 4G network. Seven cities will be involved in the initial roll-out including London, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester. "Offering speeds over 5G up to 10 times faster than 4G, we've shown commuters at busy airports and railway stations that they can download TV box sets... At CES 2019, 5G was all over the place. The wireless technology promises to deliver cellular calls and data rates in the gigabits per second, making smartphone networks a real threat to wired data networks for the first time. And that’s why the cable TV industry — represented by the Internet and Television Association (NCTA), CableLabs, and Cable Europe — announced its own plans at CES to adopt 10G, or 10-gigabit-per-second data networks. Competition is spurring the cable companies to ramp up from today’s 1-gigabit-per-second cable modems to 10 gigabits per second and beyond in the coming years. That’s going to be a two-way data rate, with fast speeds in both directions. Today, I have a download speed of 174.8 megabits per second and upload speed of 5.3 megabits per second today. CableLabs said the industry has moved from 4 percent of homes at a gigabit a second in 2016 to 80 percent in 2018.
