Tesla CEO Elon Musk took over the social media platform, Twitter in October 2022. Since the controversial acquisition, both Musk and Twitter have been over the news for several reasons including mass layoffs, Twitter Blue subscriptions and other cost-cutting policies. The social media platform has now announced that it will stop offering free access to its API (Application Programming Interface) starting February 9. Instead, Twitter will start offering a paid version of its API. A series of tweets shared from the Twitter Developer account announced that the company will discontinue support for both the legacy version 1.1 and the new version 2 of its Twitter APIs. Twitter boasts its data set The social media platform said: “Over the years, hundreds of millions of people have sent over a trillion Tweets, with billions more every week.” Twitter also claimed that its “data are among the world's most powerful data sets.” Twitter mentioned that it is “committed … [Read more...] about api: Twitter to stop free access to its API soon, will start offering a paid version to developers

American Running of the Bulls Not Much of a Thrill (Op-Ed)

August 22, 2013 by www.livescience.com Leave a Comment

Wayne Pacelle is the president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society of the United States ( HSUS ). This Op-Ed first appeared on the blog A Humane Nation, where it ran before appearing in LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights . A decade ago, I was on-site as an observer for the first American "Running of the Bulls" in a small town outside of Las Vegas. Despite the hype from the promoter — who said he'd be recreating the drama and danger of the Pamplona, Spain, event where bulls run down the cobblestone streets and head into a fighting arena — the American spectacle was an incredible snooze. The promoters of the Nevada event released cattle from a pen. The animals trotted or walked down a dirt track as attention- and thrill-starved runners tried to dash in front of them to incite them. It was an embarrassment to all, the bulls comporting themselves with more dignity and smarts than the people. South Park got it just right when it broadcast … [Read more...] about American Running of the Bulls Not Much of a Thrill (Op-Ed)

Authorities arrest Sam Bankman-Fried on FTX fraud and money laundering

December 13, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

What just happened? Investors taken to the cleaners by Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX exchange will probably be pleased to hear that the man who admittedly made a lot of "mistakes" that cost them their money is in police custody today on fraud and money laundering charges. He was arrested last night in his Bahamian headquarters at the request of US officials. Sam Bankman-Fried was scheduled to testify before Congress today, but he won't make that appointment. Bahamian police arrested the former cryptocurrency magnate on Monday night at the request of US authorities. Bankman-Fried will remain in custody in the Bahamas as he awaits extradition to the United States. "S.B.F.'s arrest followed receipt of formal notification from the United States that it has filed criminal charges against S.B.F. and is likely to request his extradition," said Bahamian officials. The New York Times reports that prosecutors confirmed that they had pressed charges against SBF in a sealed indictment to be … [Read more...] about Authorities arrest Sam Bankman-Fried on FTX fraud and money laundering

Even Netflix doesn’t know what its password-sharing rules should be

February 2, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Netflix seemingly hasn’t decided what its password-sharing rules should be, as it’s recently made changes to those rules, only to revert to its original ones almost immediately. If you’ve somehow missed it over the past year or so, Netflix has been saying that it wants to stop users from sharing their passwords . This is because, as the company sees things, these sharers are undermining its ability to invest in its platform and content – weakening its position as one of the best streaming services and reducing the amount it can invest in new best Netflix shows . But exactly how it will restrict password sharing may not yet have been finalized – with the rules seemingly changing and changing again in the span of a few days. On January 27, we shared an explanation of how Netflix will stop you from sharing passwords . The TL;DR is that Netflix will use device data and account users’ IP addresses to determine if they’re part of a household … [Read more...] about Even Netflix doesn’t know what its password-sharing rules should be

Low PSVR 2 preorders confirm that Sony is out of touch

January 31, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… It looks like Sony will be scaling back its sales projections for the PSVR 2, along with unit production, in the wake of underwhelming pre-order performance. Pre-launch statistics for PSVR 2 haven't quite met Sony's expectations which, as Bloomberg reports (opens in new tab) , initially sat at a lofty 2 million units available worldwide throughout its launch quarter. Sony was clearly betting big on its latest VR peripheral, then. Now, though, according to an as-of-yet unnamed supply partner, Sony has set a more realistic expectation of shipping 1.5 million units throughout the upcoming financial year (April 2023 - March 2024). For context, Sony's sold roughly 30 million PS5 consoles as of December 2022, suggesting Sony expected one in 15 PS5 owners to purchase the VR headset. Back to the virtual drawing board So what's with the lukewarm pre-release reception for the PSVR 2 from consumers? For starters, you only need to look at the … [Read more...] about Low PSVR 2 preorders confirm that Sony is out of touch

Current PS5 owners will have until then to redeem their free games, which will remain available on their account as long as they stay subscribed to any of PlayStation Plus' multiple tiers . Hundreds of legacy PS4 games are still available for download as part of the higher-end PlayStation Plus "Extra" and "Premium" tiers (starting at $14.99/month or $99.99/year). February 2, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

In the middle of the night, Twitter made an announcement that disappointed a wide range of developers whose research, bots, and apps depend on free access to the platform’s API to function. Twitter announced in a tweet that starting on February 9, Twitter “will no longer support free access to the Twitter API.” Instead, many developers will have to either pay to access public data or abruptly shut down their projects. Twitter has not yet shared how much its new “paid basic tier” will cost, and the company has only vaguely promised “more details on what you can expect next week.” Thousands of small developers may have to shut down free tools like @ThreadReaderApp or @RemindMe_ofThis, The Verge reported , impacting hundreds of thousands of followers who rely on small developers to build tools that help maximize their engagement with the platform. Entrepreneur and developer Tom Coates joined many developers protesting Twitter’s announcement. Coates tweeted that, while “it is not … [Read more...] about Cash-strapped Twitter to start charging developers for API access next week
