Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS ) reportedly seems set to roll out chip-based e-passports by the end of the year. According to a report in Economic Times (ET), TCS is also setting up a new command and control centre with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as well as new data centre to support the backend requirements of the project. Earlier this year, the ministry renewed its 10-year PSK deal worth over Rs 6,000 crore with TCS. This is part of the second phase of the passport project that the company bagged from the government. This passport project is said to be the country's largest mission-critical e-governance programme till date. Here's a ready reckoner on e-passports and the recent updates on the rollout. What is an e-passport At first glance, an e-passport looks just like a regular passport. However, an e-passport comes fitted with a small electronic chip, something similar to as seen on a driver’s licence. The microchip stores all the information that … [Read more...] about tcs: TCS to rollout chip-based passports by the end of this year: What are e-passports and all that will change

"Unfortunately, Chips Act funding has moved more slowly than we expected and we still don't know when it will get done," Intel said in a statement. The chip giant, however, clarified that it still plans to begin construction on the project this year, and manufacturing should start by 2025. micron: Chip stocks fall as Micron outlook signals easing demand

July 1, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

A handful of chipmakers including Micron and AMD have signaled waning demand as red-hot inflation squeezes consumer and corporate spending, while easing a two-year global semiconductor shortage that was exacerbated by supply-chain disruptions. Micron Technology Inc, a maker of memory chips, forecast on Thursday much worse-than-expected revenue for the current quarter and said the market had "weakened considerably in a very short period of time." Chip stocks fell on Friday including those of Taiwan's TSMC and MediaTek, Dutch chip-gear maker ASML, Franco-Italian firm STMicroelectronics and Germany's Infineon. Through the pandemic, chipmakers were overwhelmed trying to meet big orders from makers of smartphones and personal computers (PCs) that saw a surge in demand from people working from home. The resulting chip shortage led companies, including automakers, to slash production, delay shipments and pay steep premiums for key chips. Recent COVID-19 … [Read more...] about micron: Chip stocks fall as Micron outlook signals easing demand

Apple M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch Review: Familiar Design, New M2 Chip

June 22, 2022 by www.cnet.com Leave a Comment

"What a strange-looking MacBook." That was my first thought when I first saw the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the new M2 chip at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino during WWDC 2022 . There wasn't anything particularly strange about it -- it looked like the last several models of 13-inch Apple laptops, both Pro and Air. But in the Apple Silicon era, I've become far more used to the company's new design language, which is built around flat, constructivist designs with sharper angles and a studied minimalism. That same design has since been applied to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops, the 24-inch iMac and soon, the new 13-inch MacBook Air . The M2 Air, with a bigger screen, better webcam and newer design is said to be arriving sometime in the next month. As both 13-inch laptops have the same M2 chip and a similar price, I won't consider this a complete review until I can test and compare the two systems side by side. MacBook Pro (M2, 2022) $1,299 at Amazon … [Read more...] about Apple M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch Review: Familiar Design, New M2 Chip

Intel Delays Groundbreaking on Ohio’s ‘Silicon Heartland’ over ‘Uncertainty’ on Federal Chip Legislation

June 24, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Intel has delayed the groundbreaking ceremony for its new Ohio plant referred to by the company’s CEO as the start of a “Silicon Heartland” due to worries over a proposed law designed to support U.S. semiconductor production. The Wall Street Journal reports that Intel has told lawmakers and officials that it is indefinitely delaying the groundbreaking ceremony of its planned multibillion-dollar chip-making facility in Ohio due to frustration over the uncertainty surrounding proposed legislation that would support U.S. chip manufacturing. Mike DeWine (R) and members of Ohio’s congressional delegation that it is delaying groundbreaking “due in part to uncertainty around” the proposed legislation, called the Bipartisan Innovation Act. However, Intel hasn’t pushed back … [Read more...] about Intel Delays Groundbreaking on Ohio’s ‘Silicon Heartland’ over ‘Uncertainty’ on Federal Chip Legislation

Apple’s mixed reality headset will reportedly come with an M2 chip

June 26, 2022 by www.theverge.com Leave a Comment

Apple’s mixed reality headset has been shrouded in rumors for months now, and a new report from Bloomberg ’s Mark Gurman indicates that it could come with Apple’s flagship M2 processor . According to Gurman, Apple’s most recent version of the device, which is reportedly capable of delivering augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, includes a base M2 chip and 16GB of RAM. This deviates from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s previous prediction that Apple’s headset will have one processor with the capabilities of an M1 chip and an additional lower-end processor dedicated to handling data from the device’s sensors. While Gurman doesn’t mention the purported secondary chip in this report, a multiple chip setup has also been rumored in an earlier report from The Information . If Apple was originally planning to use the M1 as the headset’s primary processor, it only makes sense for the company to swap it out for the most recent iteration of its … [Read more...] about Apple’s mixed reality headset will reportedly come with an M2 chip

The maker of the world’s largest chip has made a major AI breakthrough

June 23, 2022 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Cerebras Systems, maker of the world’s largest processor , has broken the record for the most complex AI model trained using a single device. Using one CS-2 system , powered by the company’s wafer-sized chip ( WSE-2 ), Cerebras is now able to train AI models with up to 20 billion parameters thanks to new optimizations at the software level. The firm says the breakthrough will resolve one of the most frustrating problems for AI engineers: the need to partition large-scale models across thousands of GPUs . The result is an opportunity to drastically cut the time it takes to develop and train new models. Cerebras brings AI to the masses In sub-disciplines like natural language processing (NLP), the performance of the model correlates in a linear fashion with the number of parameters. In other words, the larger the model, the better the end result. Today, developing large-scale AI products traditionally involves spreading … [Read more...] about The maker of the world’s largest chip has made a major AI breakthrough
