Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners
Ever wonder why the zombies in the film "World War Z" appear so lifelike? It's not just makeup — some of them were created with the aid of high-tech scanning technology. The company Artec, based in Luxembourg, develops handheld 3D scanners that have been used for everything from Hollywood special effects to the development of prosthetic limbs. The technology makes it possible to create a digital model of an object in the real world, which can then be manipulated with computer design software, said Leonid Volkov, chief business development officer at Artec Group. [ Gallery: 3D Scans in Hollywood and Hospitals ] If, for instance, a company such as Lucas Films, Disney or Pixar (all Artec customers) is working on new 3D animated movie, and the producers want a glass of water to appear in the animation, "you have just two choices — scan it or draw it from scratch, which is much more expensive and time consuming," Volkov told Live Science. The makers of " World … [Read more...] about Zombies and Prosthetic Limbs? The Many Uses of 3D Scanners

Watch out, Apple’s VR headset might not fit over your glasses
Apple’s rumored VR headset has reportedly been demonstrated to Apple’s top executives at a secret preview event, but disappointing leaks suggest this next-gen gadget might fall into the same pitfalls as VR’s earliest hardware. At a private gathering at Apple’s Steve Jobs Theater in California, around 100 of Apple’s most important staff have apparently been given a showcase of what the Apple VR headset is capable of (via The New York Times (opens in new tab) ). According to people familiar with the headset – which looks like a pair of carbon-fiber ski goggles – the device features two 4K displays, cameras that record the real world for mixed reality passthrough, and an external battery pack that you’ll wear on your hip. As for software, the headset will reportedly allow artists to create and edit images and video in VR as well as serve as the perfect way to view VR content from renowned filmmakers like Jon Favreau. Motorola’s next flagships impress in specs leak and look to be going global
The Motorola Edge 40 and Edge 40 Pro have leaked, courtesy of MySmartPrice (opens in new tab) which cites a source with direct knowledge of the official specs. The Motorola Edge 40 Pro is expected to essentially be the same phone as the Moto X40 (opens in new tab) , which has already launched in China, while the Motorola Edge 40 will be a brand-new device. According to the rumor, the Edge 40 Pro will have a lot of the X40’s specs, which would mean a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 165Hz refresh rate, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage. Cameras-wise, the Moto X40 packs three rear cameras; a 50MP main shooter, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto, plus a 60MP front-facing camera. All this is powered by a 4,600mAh battery, with 125W fast charging. Since the Moto X40 is already out in the wild, the specs can be assumed to be more or less accurate, based in the notion that Motorola is essentially going to package this same … [Read more...] about Motorola’s next flagships impress in specs leak and look to be going global
Nothing Phone 2 leak hints at a spiritual successor to OnePlus
The Nothing Phone 2 has been spotted on a Bureau of Indian Standards government site, spotted by 91Mobiles , a phone blog covering the local market. This means production may be finalized and a launch could be imminent. This is good news for anyone interested in Nothing Phone, not just Indian fans, as Nothing CEO Carl Pei has pledged to bring the upcoming Nothing Phone 2 to more markets, making the US a real priority this time, and not just a late round beta testing zone. We'd heard recently from loose-lipped Qualcomm executives that the Nothing Phone 2 would likely use the company's late-2022 flagship mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. The current top-of-the-line is the 8 Plus Gen 2 platform, but the latter chipset is powerful enough to run phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 portable tablet. That makes it a serious upgrade for Nothing. The 91Mobiles leaks also suggest that the phone could get 12GB of RAM as a standard. Paired with the fast chipset, that … [Read more...] about Nothing Phone 2 leak hints at a spiritual successor to OnePlus
