Wear OS is one of those initiatives from Google that has never failed to disappoint, yet it continues to stay alive through minor updates and name changes. I keep thinking that Wear OS is worth Google paying attention to, though, particularly because it’s a part of a tech category that is growing, but I’d argue that Wear OS is probably in a worse place than it has ever been right now. And that’s saying something, because only a few months ago we thought we might be primed for a re-birth of Google’s wearable plans. I’m referring to the launch of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 back in September. Prior to Qualcomm unveiling its 3100 chip, a chipset and platform that can only be described as a disappointment today, we were hoping to see a vision for the future of Android smartwatches. The Wear OS ecosystem needed a major boost at that time and Google had basically setup the entire thing to live or die with whatever Qualcomm had cooked up. Google’s Wear OS platform hasn’t produced or been involved in anything particularly exciting in a number of years. Part of that is Google’s fault, some of the blame lies with watchmakers, and the rest is probably attributed to Qualcomm. As Google has continued to try and figure out what a good watch OS might be, the companies making the watches that run that OS haven’t done much to keep us interested, thanks in part to Qualcomm’s outdated wearable chipsets that only recently received an upgrade. With the launch of the Montblanc Summit 2, the watch we’re about to review here, all of those issues get addressed. Do they get addressed in a way that will make Wear OS a proper smartwatch platform that we can all get excited about? In some ways, yes. In other ways, well, there are still issues here. Let’s talk about it! This is our Montblanc Summit 2 review. What is the Montblanc Summit 2? The latest Summit device from Montblanc is a $995 Wear … [Read more...] about Montblanc Summit 2 Review: First 3100 Watch Change Anything?
When Qualcomm revealed its new Wear 3100 chipset — a long-awaited yet minimal update that put battery life ahead of performance — it also took the opportunity to show off one of the first partner devices. Now, that device is available for purchase. The Montblanc Summit 2 is a good representation of the type of Wear OS device Qualcomm is betting on going forward. It's a fashion smartwatch that begins at $995 and caters to the luxury jet set demographic. The wearable follows in the footsteps of Montblanc's first smartwatch, the Summit, released in 2017, which was also marketed primarily as a high-end accessory. This time around, the androgynous watch is a more moderate size, featuring a 42mm diameter rather than 46mm, and it has a new rotating crown plus two programmable buttons. Additionally, Montblanc is doubling down on aspirational lifestyle features, like "Timeshifter" — an app and watch face that provides personalized advice to minimize jet lag … [Read more...] about Montblanc Summit 2, the first Wear 3100 smartwatch, is now available starting at $995
Huawei Watch 2It's fair to say that Wear OS smartwatches aren’t exactly the most popular products among consumers, especially when compared to the Apple Watch line. Despite this, Huawei has consistently offered its own alternative – back in May, it announced the Huawei Watch 2 2018 – and now it seems as though the company has another two wearables in the pipeline. Now, considering Huawei has remained rather consistent with its smartwatch designs since the beginning, a circular display is likely to return. But, with the Apple Watch Series 4 set to reduce bezels significantly, the Huawei and Honor offerings will hopefully do the same. Internally, 4GB of storage and 768MB of RAM will presumably return. When it comes to the processor, though, the Chinese company will hopefully make some changes by swapping out the rather old Snapdragon Wear 2100 for the much newer Snapdragon Wear 3100 which was announced only yesterday and emphasizes battery life.Presently, it’s … [Read more...] about Huawei Watch GT and Honor Watch get certified; will presumably run Wear OS
The Montblanc Summit was sure handsome, but that crazy price tag ruined its mass appealAfter two and a half years of waiting around for Android Wear smartwatches to take off, Qualcomm has finally unveiled a new high-end chipset for Wear OS devices. The timing of the Snapdragon Wear 3100 announcement sure doesn’t feel coincidental, as the Apple Watch Series 4 launch is right around the corner, but at the same time, Google still doesn’t seem to be taking this endeavor very seriously.Be honest, do you even remember the first-gen Montblanc Summit? Those of you with a vague recollection of it may have appreciated the traditionally handsome design of the large and robust (read bulky) intelligent timepiece, but the German manufacturer of luxury writing instruments, watches, jewelry, and leather goods didn’t exactly target the masses with a prohibitive $890 starting price.Unfortunately, all we know right now is the Summit 2 aims to cater to both men and women with a … [Read more...] about Montblanc Summit 2 is the surprising name of the first Snapdragon Wear 3100 smartwatch
