By Roger Fingas Thursday, August 30, 2018, 01:56 pm PT (04:56 pm ET) As a rule, car owners are more satisfied with the connected infotainment experience of using Apple CarPlay versus Android Auto, though they'd rather use Google Maps for navigation, according to a J.D. Power study published this week. On a 1,000-point scale, CarPlay edged out Android Auto 777 to 748, the research firm said in its 2018 U.S. Tech Experience Index Study. For data, the company surveyed just under 20,000 vehicle owners between February and July, using responses from the 14,800 people who had bought or leased a 2018 model in the last 90 days. Of the people who said they use their own navigation option when driving, however, 56 percent said they used Google Maps most often, versus just 23 percent for Apple Maps. 16 percent replied with Waze, another Google-owned property. Apple Maps is currently the only navigation option for drivers running CarPlay. That's set to change next month with the release of iOS … [Read more...] about Drivers more satisfied with Apple CarPlay than Android Auto, says J.D. Power

Apple CarPlay, Google Maps excel in J.D. Power US Tech Experience Index Study
Every year, J.D. Power polls a number of new-car buyers on how well their technology meets (or doesn't meet) their expectations. This year's study is out, and it shows that the tech is improving, as is consumers' opinion of it.According to the 2018 J.D. Power US Tech Experience Index Study, buyers are much happier with the tech in their new cars. The company surveyed almost 20,000 vehicle owners and lessees, offering up awards based on the responses of those who purchased or leased a 2018-model-year vehicle in the last 90 days. Three ways Android Auto drives circles around Apple CarPlay
Using your phone in the car is an often awkward and often downright dangerous task. No one in their right mind should be using their phone one-handed while they drive to text, call, or open up some music. With this in mind, both Google and Apple have standardized, easy-to-use car modes for their mobile platforms, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Both have been around for years now, but the gap between them has been slowly widening and widening as they drive towards maturity. And Android Auto is leaving Apple CarPlay in the dust, thanks to three performance boosts. The one place Android beats Apple in apps Third-party maps and apps Android has traditionally been more welcoming of third-party apps, especially when it comes to setting them as the default for system actions and preferences. Nowhere is this more apparent and appreciated than in the car, as one of the biggest pitfalls with Apple CarPlay today is that it forces you to use Apple Maps over more popular navigation apps like … [Read more...] about Three ways Android Auto drives circles around Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay: iOS 12 will finally let you use Google Maps, Waze
Video: Does Apple need a cheaper iPhone?Since Apple CarPlay launched in 2014, Apple iOS users have been forced to use Apple Maps for navigation. That will finally change with iOS 12, which allows users to pick whatever third-party mapping apps they wish to use for navigation.CarPlay is Apple's system for putting select iOS apps in a driver-friendly format on a vehicle's in-built display, helping drivers make calls, reply to messages, stream music, and get navigation assistance. Announcing third-party navigation support at WWDC on Monday, Apple showed an image of the CarPlay interface with Google Maps, Google-owned Waze, and Autonavi Navigation, a Chinese app. This will be good news for the many iOS users who prefer Google Maps over Apple's younger maps platform on their iPhone but haven't had the choice to use when driving. Apple Maps has improved since its launch on iOS in 2012 but still arguably isn't as advanced as Google Maps for iOS and Android. CarPlay does currently … [Read more...] about Apple CarPlay: iOS 12 will finally let you use Google Maps, Waze
Apple CarPlay gaining third-party navigation with iOS 12
Since Apple CarPlay's launch in 2014, iOS users have been stuck with Apple Maps as their one and only choice for navigation. However, starting with iOS 12, CarPlay will begin support for third-party navigation apps. Apple CarPlay is automotive integration software that allows users to interact with supported applications for audio streaming, communication and, of course, navigation on the dashboard displays of compatible cars. Apple announced that iOS 12 would bring third-party navigation support to Apple CarPlay and briefly displayed CarPlay's dashboard interface with new icons for Waze, Google Maps and Chinese navigation app Autonavi Navigation. It's unclear whether these will be the only apps supported, but that's a solid third-party starting roster.
