Netflix for monkeys: Scientists stream on-demand art videos to primates

· February 25, 2021 ·

Zoo life is very different from the wild life, and animals are in danger of getting bored in captivity. Scientists are exploring a new way to enrich the lives of white-faced saki monkeys at the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki, Finland. The team, led by researchers from Finland's Aalto University , built a plywood and acrylic box with a monitor that played videos. The monkeys could choose to use the device to access a rotating selection of videos of worms, sea creatures, other zoo animals, abstract art or forest scenes. The system was equipped with sensors and a camera to capture data on how the monkeys used it. The animals triggered the videos by stepping into the box. CNET Science From the lab to your inbox. Russia eyes tax on global digital services firms

· February 10, 2021 ·

Russia wants to tax foreign companies earning profits from digital services provided in Russia, Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Sazanov said in an interview with accounting firm KPMG published on Wednesday. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov last year promised not to raise taxes after Russia had targeted the mining, tobacco and oil industries to help plug holes in its budget. A rise of two percentage points in income tax for wealthy Russians came into effect on Jan. 1, as did a tax on deposits. "Large foreign digital companies are earning profits from providing services in Russia, which in principle are not currently taxed in our country because often they do not have offices here," Sazanov told KPMG, without naming the foreign firms he had in mind. "Therefore, we will strive to change the situation and tax this profit." The OECD is currently steering a group of nearly 140 countries including Russia negotiating the first update in a generation to rules for taxing cross-border … [Read more...] about Russia eyes tax on global digital services firms

In the end, though, it doesn't matter which video sends you down the rabbit hole, even if it's one about actual rabbits . What's important is that you're romping in one of the most comforting and least cynical places on the internet, a place where charming tales of animals divert your attention from sobering headlines. Sure, it'll get schmaltzy after a while, and you may even feel emotionally manipulated, but you're not here to feel bad. Editors' top picks Subscribe to CNET Now for the day's most interesting reviews, news stories and videos.
