Supported by ByCade Metz and Raymond Zhong Dec. 3, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO — The world’s leading technology companies, from Google to Alibaba in China, are racing to build the first quantum computer, a machine that would be far more powerful than today’s computers. This device could break the encryption that protects digital information, putting at risk everything from the billions of dollars spent on e-commerce to national secrets stored in government databases. An answer? Encryption that relies on the same concepts from the world of physics. Just as some scientists are working on quantum computers, others are working on quantum security techniques that could thwart the code-breaking abilities of these … [Read more...] about Race Is On to Protect Data From Next Leap in Computers. This was made possible by using a novel remote interface created by the team at ScienceAtHome, Aarhus University. By manipulating laser beams and magnetic fields, the task was to cool as many atoms as possible down to extremely cold temperatures just above absolute zero at -273.15°C. Surprisingly, both groups using the remote interface consistently outperformed the best solutions identified by the experimental team over months and years of careful optimization. Why could players without any formal training in experimental physics manage to find surprisingly good solutions? One hint came from an interview with a top-player, a retired Italian microwave systems engineer. He said, that for him participating in the Alice Challenge reminded him a lot of his previous job as an engineer. He never attained a detailed understanding of microwave systems but instead spent years developing an intuition of how to optimize the performance of his "black-box". "We humans may develop general … [Read more...] about Quantum Science Turns Social

Great to have you on the show and to talk about the just released, just today report of the National Defense Strategy Commission. ERIC EDELMAN: Great to be here with you. MICHAEL MORELL: I need to start by telling our listeners that I am not an unbiased interviewer here. I myself was a member of the commission-- and a member who believes deeply in the conclusions that we reached. And I want the listeners to know that, and I want there to be full transparency here as to-- as to my bias. And to try to compensate a little bit for that, Eric, I'm gonna try to ask some questions that a critic of the report might ask, okay? ERIC EDELMAN: Fair enough. MICHAEL MORELL: I also want to note that you are one of two co-chairs of the … [Read more...] about Transcript: Eric Edelman talks with Michael Morell on “Intelligence Matters” podcast
