I wrote this way back in January of 2015, when I first started thinking that, what became iPhone X and iPhone XS, were the next inevitable steps forward in iPhone evolution: Imagine a future iPhone where the screen goes to the edge on both sides, disappearing not at the curve but as the curve. Imagine an iPhone where the FaceTime camera and earpiece take up almost no space, and the screen reaches almost all the way to the top. And imagine an iPhone where the Home button is replaced by some new technology that can still allow for a physical escape to a known state, that can still scan fingerprints and authenticate, but that also lets the screen reach almost all the way to the bottom. The crux of the idea was that people kept asking for a more modern 4-inch iPhone, but it occurred to me it wasn't the smaller screen size they really wanted, it was the smaller phone size, and if the screen went edge-to-edge, they … [Read more...] about iPhone SE 2: What happened to it and why?

Following a leak of new iPhone model numbers by the Eurasian Economic Commission earlier this week, case makers now anticipate that Apple will release an updated iPhone SE 2 in May, according to a new report from Japanese blog Macotakara. Not surprisingly, only iterative changes are expected for the entry-level model, which has previously been used to help Apple’s sales in developing countries such as India. According to the case makers, who spoke during a Hong Kong trade show, Apple will pull the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone SE’s bottom, potentially assisting in waterproofing the new device. They also expect no changes to the front of the iPhone SE 2, which will preserve both a four-inch screen and Touch ID-laden Home button, though there is still some uncertainty as to whether the device’s back will switch from metal to glass, enabling wireless charging. It’s further claimed that the new model will have an A10 Fusion processor to support HEVC … [Read more...] about Case makers expect iPhone SE 2 to get A10 Fusion, ditch headphone jack

By Dan Pye ● Tuesday, January 30, 2018 While rumors about an update to the iPhone SE have been swirling since early 2017, well-connected KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn’t think we’re going to see a new version of the four-inch device any time soon, MacRumors reports. Apple released the smaller device in 2016 to fill the gap in its line up felt by users who didn’t want the larger size (and price tag) of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but Kuo now says with Apple developing both LED and LCD versions of the larger iPhones for this fall, the company doesn’t have the development resources to focus on another iPhone. “We think the firm will do all it can to avoid repeating the mistake of a shipment delay for the three new models,” Kuo wrote, referencing the delay in launching the iPhone X last year. “As such, we believe Apple is unlikely to have enough spare resources to develop a new iPhone model for launch in 2Q18.” Apple doubled the storage … [Read more...] about Analyst casts doubt on updated iPhone SE appearing in 2018
