Samsung didn’t unveil its foldable smartphone at SDC 2018 this week but it did show off its foldable display. The actual device was obscured in a black box which allowed the company to show off the display without revealing its design. Samsung said that it will be able to start mass producing the Infinity Flex foldable display in a matter of months. This means that the foldable smartphone will not be available before next year. Samsung’s mobile division boss DJ Koh has said that the company will initially produce one million units of the device. It may decide to increase production if the market response is good. He has previously confirmed that the foldable device will be released globally.Samsung foldable smartphone will be widely availableThe initial production run of one million units will enable the company to measure the market’s pulse. If it feels that there’s enough demand it can then increase production. It’s difficult to say at this point in time … [Read more...] about Samsung to produce one million units of its foldable smartphone initially

Explore the German Research Center Devoted to the Science of Measurement
Photographer Florian Thoss was lying on the couch watching TV a couple years ago when he saw a story about Germany's national metrology institute, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. The research center in Braunschweig is devoted to the science of measurement, something Thoss didn't even know existed. It sparked his curiosity. "I couldn't imagine what such a place looks like," he says. He decided to find out. For Rooms of Science, Floss explored the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, or PTB, documenting the odd scientific instruments that service a most punctilious cause. "Humanity needs order and structure, and this is the literal place where it is created," Thoss says. Metrology might sound boring, but it is crucial to the functioning of, well, everything. Being able to take exact measurements makes manufacturing and trade feasible, along with landing airplanes, diagnosing diseases and pumping gas. That wasn't always possible; for most human history, measurements varied … [Read more...] about Explore the German Research Center Devoted to the Science of Measurement
Researchers Use Nanotechnology to Improve the Accuracy of Measuring Devices
Scientists from Higher school of economics and the Federal Scientific Research Centre 'Crystallography and Photonics' have synthesized multi-layered nanowires in order to study their magnetoresistance properties. Improving this effect will allow scientists to increase the accuracy of indicators of various measuring instruments, such as compasses and radiation monitors. The results of the study have been published in the paper 'Structure of Cu/Ni Nanowires Obtained by Matrix Synthesis.' One of the unique features of artificial nanostructures is the giant magnetoresistance effect in thin layers of metal. This effect is exploited in various electronic devices. The scientists synthesized multi-layered copper and nickel nanowires, in order to study their characteristics, which depend on the layers' composition and geometry. 'We expect that the transition to multi-layered nanowires will increase the giant magnetoresistance effect considerably. Today, we are 'choosing' the method of nanowire … [Read more...] about Researchers Use Nanotechnology to Improve the Accuracy of Measuring Devices
Off topic: Units of measurement, exorcism course, fair-weather fandom, dying langugages
By Levi Sumagaysay | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group April 18, 2018 at 6:13 am precise units of measurement. The Vatican’s annual exorcism course is open amid a purported rise in people reporting being possessed by demons. On fair-weather fandom being “the emotionally, civically, and maybe even morally superior way to consume sports.” And a look at Wikitongues, which is documenting the world’s dying languages. … [Read more...] about Off topic: Units of measurement, exorcism course, fair-weather fandom, dying langugages
Unit of Thai telco True says customers’ data leakage fixed
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s iTruemart, a unit of mobile phone operator True Corp Plc, said on Saturday it has fixed a data leak that led to information on some of its customers, including their ID and passport data, becoming public. The files of customers buying “TrueMove H” mobile packages had been ‘hacked’, it said in a statement following reports of the leak. It was the first known instance of a major data leak from a mobile operator in Thailand. Niall Merrigan, a Norway-based security researcher, detailed on his personal blog on Friday that he was able to access 32 gigabytes of True’s customer data, including identification cards and passports. Merrigan told Reuters the data was “public facing” and that he notified True of the leak in March. The company said it would alert the customers affected by the hacking on measures it is taking to protect their data. It did not say how many customers or data files had been … [Read more...] about Unit of Thai telco True says customers’ data leakage fixed
