The big picture: Recent reports indicate Tencent wants to become Ubisoft's biggest shareholder, working out an aggressive deal to buy stocks from public shareholders and the Guillemot family. Tencent is likely seeking more international gaming revenue as both companies have run into turbulence recently. Sources have told Reuters that Tencent senior executives met with Ubisoft's founding Guillemot family in May to discuss making an additional stake purchase in the company. Tencent bought five percent of Ubisoft in 2018. It isn't clear how much more Tencent wants, but it's aiming to become Ubisoft's single largest shareholder. The deal's details aren't final yet, but Tencent is making an aggressive offer at a premium. Ubisoft's stock price over the last three months was 44 euros a share, but Tencent is offering 100. Ubisoft's historical ceiling was 108 in 2018. The Guillemot family owns 15 percent of Ubisoft while public shareholders hold around 80 percent.
Samsung’s 2022 QLED TVs just became an even better pick for gamers
Audio player loading… The Samsung TV Gaming Hub just got an upgrade; with the Amazon Luna game streaming service finally launching on the platform. Previously the only way to play Amazon Luna games on a TV was with a Fire TV device, such as the Fire TV Stick (2020) , Fire TV Stick 4K , or Fire TV Cube . Now, anyone who owns a 2022 Samsung TV with the Samsung Gaming Hub can access Luna’s games (opens in new tab) (assuming you’re also subscribed to the service). Luna joins the Xbox TV app (which is also currently exclusive to Samsung’s 2022 smart TVs ), as well as Google Stadia and GeForce Now . With the addition of Amazon Luna, Samsung’s Gaming Hub now gives players easy access to over 1,000 different cloud-based games. What is Amazon Luna? Amazon Luna shares a lot of similarities with other game streaming services. Rather than games running on a local console like a PS5 or Xbox Series X they’re instead handled by external servers and … [Read more...] about Samsung’s 2022 QLED TVs just became an even better pick for gamers
Textbook publisher: NFTs will let us squeeze even more money out of students
Textbook publisher Pearson suggests blockchain tech could let it take a cut of secondary textbook sales, capturing a section of the book market that’s so far escaped it. As quoted by Bloomberg , Pearson CEO Andy Bird believes non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, could help publishers make money off textbook resales, although he stopped short of describing concrete plans. “In the analog world, a Pearson textbook was resold up to seven times, and we would only participate in the first sale,” said Bird after the company announced its latest quarterly earnings this week. “The move to digital helps diminish the secondary market, and technology like blockchain and NFTs allows us to participate in every sale of that particular item as it goes through its life.” Bloomberg suggests this would mean letting buyers resell ebooks, something that’s so far been a rarity in the publishing world. It’s not clear how, when, or if NFTs might show up in Pearson’s catalog. But they could mark a new … [Read more...] about Textbook publisher: NFTs will let us squeeze even more money out of students
Xbox Game Pass adds another overlooked RPG this month
Audio player loading… Microsoft has revealed the next bunch of games coming to Xbox Game Pass, including a stellar RPG that likely passed under your radar. Leading this month’s Xbox Game Pass line-up is Expeditions: Rome. Part historical drama, part turn-based tactics, and part character-driven RPG, it places you in the boots of a Roman general. You’ll be leading armies of Legionaries across Greece and Gaul, before zooming into patrician villas to navigate the political quarrels of the senate. It didn’t receive a huge fanfare when released earlier this year, but its ambition is reason enough to check it out. Microsoft also announced (opens in new tab) that Ghost Recon Wildlands will be hitting the subscription service. The latest Ubisoft title to come to Game Pass following Watch Dogs 2 and Assassin’s Creed Origins , the military simulator dumps you in a massive open world overrun by a fictional drug cartel. Although we don't reckon it's one of the best co-op … [Read more...] about Xbox Game Pass adds another overlooked RPG this month
Sony doesn’t think it could make a Call of Duty rival
Why it matters: A primary concern surrounding Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is the potential effect of making Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox and Windows. Sony recently expressed those fears to Brazil's competition regulator. The company's comments illuminate what it thinks truly makes a AAA game. Sony has voiced its apprehensions over the Microsoft Activision deal to Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), one of many competition regulators from across the globe scrutinizing the purchase for anti-competitive behavior. If Activision stopped releasing Call of Duty games for PlayStation, Sony doesn't think it could replace the franchise with its own game. Microsoft's agreement to buy Activision Blizzard – the biggest of its recent acquisitions – faces review from the American Federal Trade Commission, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, and over a dozen other regulators in countries like Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China, South … [Read more...] about Sony doesn’t think it could make a Call of Duty rival
5 Reasons to Choose Stadia Over Other Cloud Gaming Platforms
Interest in the cloud gaming space is heating up. As big brands like Xbox, NVIDIA, and Amazon all jockey for their place in the market, early trailblazer Google Stadia has steadily evolved since launching in late 2019. Here are just some of the reasons you might want to choose Stadia over the competition. Console-Like Experience While major cloud gaming services like GeForce NOW and Shadow offer an experience that will resonate best with PC gamers, Stadia feels more like it was built for console players. In lieu of logging into Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect, you only need a single Google account to access all of your games. The user interface, including the game library, is all scrollable with a game controller — no mouse and keyboard necessary, unless you prefer them. Stadia has full achievement support, a place to view captured screenshots and videos, and a game store that can be accessed via the mobile app or on a Chrome browser. There’s even a … [Read more...] about 5 Reasons to Choose Stadia Over Other Cloud Gaming Platforms
