The White House is in discussions with former Michigan Senate candidate John James about the vacant United Nations ambassador post, with President Donald Trump leaning toward nominating the former businessman and Iraq War veteran, according to three people close to the process. The talks have included frequent phone calls as Trump’s team searches for a new top diplomat after State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert withdrew herself from consideration for the post over the weekend, citing family concerns. Former State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has withdrawn her name for consideration to be the United States ambassador, the State Department said in a statement Saturday. President Trump will make an announcement with respect to a nominee soon, the statement said. Nauert said in a statement that she is "grateful" for the opportunity, but the "past two months have been grueling for my family and therefore it is in the best interest of my family that I withdraw my name from consideration."A former Fox News anchor, Nauert joined the Trump administration in 2017. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published on Thursday. The study found U.S. tech giant IBM had by far the biggest AI patent portfolio, with 8,920 patents, ahead of Microsoft with 5,930 and a group of mainly Japanese tech conglomerates. China accounted for 17 of the top 20 academic institutions involved in patenting AI and was particularly strong in the fast growing area of “deep learning” – a machine-learning technique that includes speech recognition systems. “The U.S. and China obviously have stolen a lead.
