Louis Theroux and Eamonn Holmes were among victims of a Twitter hack aimed at highlighting security flaws in the popular social network. Messages appeared on several celebrity and journalist accounts on Thursday evening with the words: “This account has been temporarily hijacked by INSINIA SECURITY.” Insinia Security said they had hacked the accounts to highlight a vulnerability in how Twitter secures accounts using phone numbers. Researchers at the company were able to remotely control multiple accounts by using fake SMS verification that made it appear as if they belonged to the account owners. The Sunday Telegraph previously reported how flaws in phone networks that allowed text spoofing could pose a security risk, after seeing research from Insinia. In a blog post, Insinia wrote that the text vulnerability on Twitter could help “spread fake news and disinformation via influential celebrities and journalists” and “send direct messages to trusted … [Read more...] about Louis Theroux, Eamonn Holmes Twitter accounts hacked

The day my Twitter account was hacked and left to rot in the sun
On the day my Twitter account was hacked, my 7-year-old nephew hit me in the nuts with a tetherball. It was an accident. He didn't know better. I served him a softball and he hit it back as hard as he could swing. The ball was moving at speed. It cut a tight circular arc and hit me directly in the right testicle. In a rich twist of fate, I had stepped into the blow, a perfect collision. I feel comfortable saying it's the worst nut shot I've ever endured in my 37 years living on this planet.A difficult pain to communicate. Pure, abominable agony. Intense, but compartmentalised. I found myself suppressing an overwhelming urge to vomit, but I was also laughing hysterically. I sank to my knees, clutching my genitals, desperately trying to not poop myself, but I was also aware this was a comedic situation. I was laughing. I screamed out loud, "He hit me in the nuts!" to my wife. She simply shook her head and walked off. This is not a story about being hit in the nuts with a tetherball. No, … [Read more...] about The day my Twitter account was hacked and left to rot in the sun

BSkyB’s Sky Apps, Twitter Account Hacked By Syrian Electronic Army [Updated]
Syrian Electronic Army, a hacking group responsible for several visible attacks in the last few weeks, has evidently taken control of BSkyB's Sky apps in the Play Store, replacing the promo headers with SEA's logo, and the app descriptions with "Syrian Electronic Army Was Here." In a tweet earlier, BSkyB's Twitter account (which we now know was also compromised) warned its users to uninstall all Sky apps, as they "were hacked and replaced." Indeed, BSkyB's apk files were replaced by the hacking group. Syrian Electronic Army, the group behind the infiltration, is also responsible for attacks on the Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Human Rights Watch, Financial Times, the Onion and many others (including Twitter accounts belonging to ITV and BBC Weather), and are "enemies of Anonymous," according to an interview reported on Vice. Earlier today, it was reported that the group attempted an attack on the water system in Haifa, a city in northwestern Israel. So, how did the attack happen? The … [Read more...] about BSkyB’s Sky Apps, Twitter Account Hacked By Syrian Electronic Army [Updated]
YouTube staffer in active shooting had Twitter account hacked
Less than an hour after tweeting about being safe from an active shooting at YouTube's headquarters, Vadim Lavrusik's account was hit by hackers. Lavrusik, a product manager at YouTube, sent one of the first tweets out about an active shooting at the office in San Bruno, California, at 12:57 p.m. The first 911 call for the shooting had come in at 12:46 p.m., and police arrived in two minutes, San Bruno police chief Ed Barberini said at a press conference on Tuesday. At about 2:10 p.m., after Lavrusik tweeted that he was safe and evacuated, a new tweet came up from the account, writing, "PLEASE HELP ME FIND MY FRIEND I LOST HIM IN THE SHOOTING," with a Flipboard URL linking to a photo of KEEMSTAR, a YouTube personality. Three minutes after that tweet, another post came in, writing, "my name is so gay honestly." They were quickly deleted, and there have been no new tweets from Lavrusik's account since, but "see new tweets" continue to pop up on the account, and … [Read more...] about YouTube staffer in active shooting had Twitter account hacked
