Is 4K Really Worth It In a Laptop?

August 17, 2022 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

When you buy a laptop , you’ll likely have the choice between various screen resolutions, with 4K UHD being one of them. It’s tempting to pick the highest-resolution screen option and call it a day, but is it worth it? The “Retina” Resolution Problem The term “ Retina ” was coined by Apple to describe displays that have a pixel density that makes individual pixels invisible at normal viewing distances. In other words, increasing pixel densities beyond the “retina” level increases perceived image detail because your eyes can’t resolve those additional pixels. Every display becomes “Retina” as your distance from it increases, but typically the ergonomic advice for computer displays is to have them no closer than 20 inches from your eyes. We used a 13.3-inch, 15.6-inch, and 17.3-inch laptop in natural positions, and in each case, the distance was in excess of 20 inches, so this isn’t an unreasonable distance for comfortable use. The problem is that even a large … [Read more...] about Is 4K Really Worth It In a Laptop?

This vulnerability lets an attacker view every file on a Mac

August 16, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

PSA A security researcher has discovered a flaw in macOS that could let an attacker view every file on a system. Using it, hackers can circumvent every layer of Mac security, alter core system files, and access the webcam. Apple patched it last year, but older macOS versions are still vulnerable. Apple patched a severe vulnerability in macOS Monterey last October, but older versions remain susceptible to a code injection method that can break a Mac wide open. There are no known cases of attackers using the exploit, but it could leak sensitive information or grant a hacker elevated privileges. The exploit can bypass two principal security measures Apple designed to stop malicious code from spreading through a system. The first, macOS Sandbox, is supposed to confine malicious code to the app that it has infected. The second, System Integrity Protection (SIP), stops authorized software from reaching sensitive files. Neither of these can stop the flaw in unpatched systems. The … [Read more...] about This vulnerability lets an attacker view every file on a Mac

iOS VPNs have leaked traffic for more than 2 years, researcher claims

August 17, 2022 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

A security researcher says that Apple's iOS devices don't fully route all network traffic through VPNs as a user might expect, a potential security issue the device maker has known about for years. Michael Horowitz, a longtime computer security blogger and researcher, puts it plainly—if contentiously—in a continually updated blog post . "VPNs on iOS are broken," he says. Any third-party VPN seems to work at first, giving the device a new IP address, DNS servers, and a tunnel for new traffic, Horowitz writes. But sessions and connections established before a VPN is activated do not terminate and, in Horowitz's findings with advanced router logging, can still send data outside the VPN tunnel while it's active. In other words, you might expect a VPN client to kill existing connections before establishing a secure connection so they can be re-established inside the tunnel. But iOS VPNs can't seem to do this, Horowitz says, a finding that is backed up by a similar report from May … [Read more...] about iOS VPNs have leaked traffic for more than 2 years, researcher claims

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro Ongoing Review: Better Batteries, Bye Bezel

August 16, 2022 by www.cnet.com Leave a Comment

The Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro are Samsung's latest wearables that want to be your go-to Android watch. Set for release on Aug. 26, along with the Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 , they have bigger batteries, a new temperature sensor and a more durable design. But they lose the fan-favorite rotating bezel that the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic model still offers as an alternative to using a touch-sensitive rim. This year's watch comes in two variants : The Galaxy Watch 5 and a slightly larger, more rugged Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Apart from the construction, sports modes and battery capacity, they share most of the same features. So far, I haven't found that many significant differences warrant an upgrade from last year's Galaxy Watch 4 series given the software is largely unchanged and the new temperature sensor is not yet active. But the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is the more tempting proposition if you want a more durable watch with a bigger battery. With the Pixel Watch on the horizon and … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro Ongoing Review: Better Batteries, Bye Bezel

ps4: Microsoft admits Xbox One sold less than half of Sony PS4

August 16, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

The Xbox One console did sell a lot less than its rival, the PS4 , with the PS4 selling more than twice as many Xbox One units, Microsoft has admitted in a court document submitted with Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), as per a report by Game Luster. Microsoft is undergoing investigation by the Brazilian government over its Activision Blizzard acquisition. “Sony has surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and installed base, having sold more than twice as many Xbox in the last generation,” admits Microsoft in the document, as roughly translated from Portuguese. , As per Microsoft, the console sales figures reportedly do not define the “key metric of success” the company likes to focus on but engagement does. Irrespective of the definition of success as believed by the company, the Xbox One console did underperform at the market when compared with the PS4, its chief rival. The tech giant has not revealed its console … [Read more...] about ps4: Microsoft admits Xbox One sold less than half of Sony PS4

China Boasts ‘Increasing Important Role’ in Propping up the Taliban

August 17, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The Chinese state-run Global Times newspaper applauded its bosses on Tuesday for playing “an increasing important role” in helping the Taliban cement its stranglehold on Afghanistan through business ventures, particularly in pursuit of the country’s vast mineral wealth. The Taliban, a Sunni terrorist organization, seized control of the country a year ago on Monday as a result of leftist American President Joe Biden extending the 20-year Afghan war beyond the previous deadline of May 1, 2021. The group, which had previously agreed to negotiations with the U.S.-backed Afghan government, responded to Biden extending the war into September, and then walking back the deadline to August, by launching tens of thousands of attacks on the government and ultimately making it into Kabul. Then-President Ashraf Ghani, who insists he remains president of Afghanistan to this day, immediately fled the country upon the Taliban’s arrival in the capital. Taliban jihadists have struggled to … [Read more...] about China Boasts ‘Increasing Important Role’ in Propping up the Taliban

Your Phone Plan Might Add iCloud, Apple Music, and More

August 17, 2022 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

It’s common for cell phone plans to bundle streaming services or cloud storage, usually at a reduced cost or free. Apple has now opened the door for iCloud storage, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and other services to be bundled with mobile carrier plans. EE, a mobile network in the United Kingdom, announced this morning that it is the first mobile network to bundle Apple One with a mobile plan. The company’s ‘Full Works for iPhone’ package will include the bonus starting on August 31, as well as a ‘Roam Abroad Pass’ for international roaming in Canada, the European Union, United States, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. EE has an alternative plan for Android devices with different benefits. Apple One is Apple’s all-in-one subscription service, which includes nearly all of Apple’s paid services. The base Individual and Family plans have Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50 GB of iCloud storage, while the Premier plan adds Apple News+ and Fitness+. EE is only offering the … [Read more...] about Your Phone Plan Might Add iCloud, Apple Music, and More
