Rocket Report: ULA Centaur stage has an ‘anomaly,’ Virgin Orbit funding is dire

March 31, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Welcome to Edition 5.31 of the Rocket Report! We're about to tip over into April, and all signs continue to point to the likelihood of a Starship orbital launch attempt this month. I've heard all sorts of dates, but most recently, SpaceX appears to be working internally toward April 10. That lines up with about when a launch license is expected from the Federal Aviation Administration. It probably won't happen that soon, but we are pretty darn close, y'all. As always, we welcome reader submissions , and if you don't want to miss an issue, please subscribe using the box below (the form will not appear on AMP-enabled versions of the site). Each report will include information on small-, medium-, and heavy-lift rockets and a quick look ahead at the next three launches on the calendar. Isar Aerospace scores a big funding round . Before this week, the Munich-based company had raised about $165 million, a reasonable amount of cash for a launch startup building a small rocket. Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has increased its spending on research and development (R&D), and hired additional staff, in an attempt to stabilize its business during a very turbulent 2022. During the company’s earnings briefing in Shenzhen, earlier this week, the company’s rotating chairs, Meng Wanzhou, and Eric Xu, said the company’s goal for 2022 was “sustainable survival and development” as it sought to expand and “optimize” its business portfolio. Huawei’s portfolio now includes ICT infrastructure, smart devices, cloud, digital power and intelligent automotive services. "Solid" finances When it comes to finances, however, Wanzhou said the business is “solid, with strong resilience and flexibility”. That being said, Wanzhou announced R&D investment rising 13.2% year-on-year, hitting a record high of $23.5 billion in 2022. That’s 25.1% of total revenue (compared to 22.4% a year before), she added. The company also brought in additional staff to its … [Read more...] about Huawei ramps up R&D spending in mobile push

Google Drive does a surprise rollout of file limits, locking out some users

March 31, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

"Please delete 2 million files to continue using your Google Drive account." That was the message that Reddit user ra13 woke up to one day. Users over the limit found themselves suddenly locked out of new file uploads, and it was up to them to figure out what was going wrong. Did we mention this all started in February? A post on the Google Drive API issue tracker shows some users have been seeing this error for almost two months now. The original message said: "The limit for the number of items, whether trashed or not, created by this account has been exceeded." And sometime in March, it was updated to say, "Error 403: This account has exceeded the creation limit of 5 million items. To create more items, move items to the trash and delete them forever." Since there is nothing anywhere … [Read more...] about Google Drive does a surprise rollout of file limits, locking out some users
