GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer is leading a drive to reward 300,000 Indian visa workers for taking college graduate jobs from at least 200,000 young middle aged or older American graduates. Via Twitter, the North Dakota Senator is pushing the “Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act,” which was also championed by former GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder until he lost his 2018 election. The legislation “is about exactly that: fairness,” Cramer tweeted. “The long wait for these green cards is a disservice to legal immigrants and to the potential of the American economy. Let’s get this passed.” But Cramer’s bill does not offer fairness or safeguards to the many Americans who are losing careers or starter jobs to the imported army of roughly 500,000 Indian workers and recruiters, said Dawn Collins, a former vice-president at J.P. Morgan Chase bank. Casey and other American professionals were forced out of their software jobs in 2016 to make … [Read more...] about GOP Senators Push Green Card Rewards for Indian Visa Workers Who Take College Jobs in U.S.

One of the most important – and unfortunately enduring – IT job market trends for CIOs to monitor is the continued chasm between technology talent demand and supply. Computer-related jobs are expected to grow at the faster-than-average rate of 12 percent through 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In just two years, BLS predicted, there will be 1.4 million open technology jobs but only 400,000 new computer science graduates nationwide. That’s causing many IT leaders to get more involved in STEM issues to address this long-term problem. The more robots a country has, the higher its gross domestic product and, on average, the richer its citizens. On the other hand, a country that resists automation loses out not just on wealth creation but on new jobs as well. This might seem bonkers given the reasonable fear that computers, robots and AI could wipe out half of all jobs in the next 20 years. It also might seem foolhardy from the C-suite perspective, since not all robots are suited for all jobs, and underused robots are costlier than a seasonal or on-demand human workforce. The bulk of economists argue that automation ultimately creates more jobs. That might be of little comfort to a Detroit assembly-line worker. Automation does eliminate jobs in the short term, with often painful and even permanent … [Read more...] about Robot reality check: They create wealth — and jobs
