COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in Americans between March 2020 and October 2021, accounting for one in every eight deaths. In that time frame, COVID-19 ranked in the top five causes of death for every age group of people older than 15 years. Between January and October 2021, the pandemic disease was the leading cause of death among people 45 to 54 years old. That's all according to a study of national death certificate data published Tuesday in JAMA Internal Medicine by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The study found COVID-19 caused roughly 700,000 deaths between March 2020 and October 2021. The pandemic disease trailed only heart disease and cancer, which caused roughly 2.15 million collectively in that time frame. The fourth and fifth deadliest afflictions in the US were accidental deaths—including car crashes, overdoses, and alcohol-related deaths—and stroke, which collectively caused around 624,000 deaths during that period. Design in the Age of Digital Twins: A Conversation With Graphics-Pioneer Donald Greenberg
Asked about the future of design, Donald Greenberg holds up a model of a human aorta. “After my son became an intravascular heart surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, he hired one of my students to use CAT scans and create digital 3D models of an aortic aneurysm,” said the computer graphics pioneer in a video interview from his office at Cornell University. The models enabled custom stents that fit so well patients could leave the hospital soon after they’re inserted. It’s one example Greenberg gives of how computer graphics are becoming part of every human enterprise. A Whole New Chapter Expanding the frontier, he’s creating new tools for an architecture design course based on today’s capabilities for building realistic 3D worlds and digital twins . It will define a holistic process so everyone from engineers to city planners can participate in a design. The courseware is still at the concept stage, but his passion for it is palpable. “This is my next big project, and I’m … [Read more...] about Design in the Age of Digital Twins: A Conversation With Graphics-Pioneer Donald Greenberg

Microsoft owning Netflix is the most awful, brilliant idea I’ve heard in ages
Audio player loading… Netflix needs a buyer. Flying solo while content costs and competition skyrocket and subscription levels stagnate or fall is not sustainable. But is Microsoft the right rescuer? A new rumor suggests that Netflix and Microsoft, which recently climbed on the couch together to binge billions of dollars in ad revenue on Netflix's upcoming ad-tie-supported service, might become more than just friends. Speaking to Yahoo Finance (opens in new tab) , Needham Senior Analysis Laura Martin contends this deal is simply Phase One of a wooing process that could bring Microsoft inside until it decides to bring Netflix all the way inside. "Netflix is trying to get closer to Microsoft in hopes that, after Microsoft digests its Activision acquisition, it turns and buys Netflix next," said Martin, referencing the still under regulatory scrutiny $68B Activision acquisition . As Martin rightly assumes, Microsoft is unlikely to make any other company buys - at … [Read more...] about Microsoft owning Netflix is the most awful, brilliant idea I’ve heard in ages

Apple reportedly spent more than $100 million on the new U2 album
Apple CEO Tim Cook and U2 frontman Bono made big news this week when they announced that the band's new album would be distributed, at no charge, to the roughly 500 million people with an iTunes account. But as Bono made clear on stage, someone had to make up the difference. "First you would have to pay for it," he told Cook, "because we’re not going in for the free music around here." "We’re not going in for the free music around here." So what does 500 million records cost these days? Pope Francis Decries ‘Delusional’ Pursuit of Eternal Youth
ROME — Pope Francis warned Wednesday the pursuit of “eternal youth” is a dangerous pipe dream that prevents people from focusing on things that really matter. “The conceit of stopping time – of wanting eternal youth, unlimited wellbeing, absolute power – is not only impossible, it is delusional,” the pontiff told crowds gathered in the Vatican for his weekly General Audience . On the contrary, embracing the passage of time with nobility, grace, and gratitude is the path to true wisdom, the pope proposed, and allows people to learn what life is really about. “An old age that is consumed in the dejection of missed opportunities brings despondency to oneself and to others,” he declared. On the other hand, “old age lived with gentleness, lived with respect for real life,” brings wisdom. “Our life is not made to be wrapped up in itself, in an imaginary earthly perfection: it is destined to go beyond, through the passage of death – because death is a passage,” he asserted. … [Read more...] about Pope Francis Decries ‘Delusional’ Pursuit of Eternal Youth
