Audio player loading… While gaming service Stadia shuts down on January 18, Google has announced plans to keep its controller alive. It may not seem like much in light of a whole catalog of cloud streaming games becoming inaccessible, but the controller really was the quiet highlight of Google’s first major step into gaming. While it’s not revealed the full details yet, Google said on Twitter that it will “be releasing a self-serve tool to enable Bluetooth connections on your Stadia Controller .” Google has promised to share the specifics in time for the shutdown. Currently, the Stadia gamepad can only connect to Google’s platform. Until these recently announced plans, when the service shuts down on January 18, the controller would have become a useless hunk of plastic, nickel, and silicon destined for landfill. Now it appears you will be able to use the controller with other Bluetooth-enabled devices – PC and Android, most likely; maybe Apple devices and even the PS5 , … [Read more...] about The best thing to come out of Google Stadia will live on after the service dies

Read our editorial mission (Opens in a new window) & see how we test (Opens in a new window) . There's a big difference between a digital photo and a printed photograph. The latter is a physical object, rather than just an image file displayed on a screen. Sure, you can hold your phone up to someone's face to show them snapshots of your baby niece, but that's no way to proudly display or physically share a favorite shot. Online photo printers like Mpix, Nations Photo Lab, Shutterfly, and Snapfish exist because people still want their pictures printed. What Is “Abandonware” and Is it Legal?
Abandonware is any software still under copyright when the copyright owner either doesn't or can't enforce it. Regardless, since the copyright still exists, hosting and downloading abandonware generally counts as piracy in the US, making it illegal. There are lots of “wares” when it comes to software: freeware, shareware , donationware, and more! You may have come across “abandonware” that just needs a simple click to download, but what does it mean for software to be abandonware? Is it legal? What Is Abandonware, Exactly? Abandonware is any software whose copyright has not lapsed, and all of the legal restrictions that apply to typical copyright are still in effect, yet the copyright holder isn’t currently enforcing the copyright. Such holders may be in one of several situations, such as: The holder ceased to exist without ever transferring the copyright to another entity. The holder is still in business, but they’re no longer selling the software and aren’t expending … [Read more...] about What Is “Abandonware” and Is it Legal?
Meal Kits vs. Groceries: What’s Actually Cheaper? We Do the Math
Grocery items may still be skyrocketing in price (when they aren't out of stock ). But inflation hasn't affected the price of meal kits much, making these easy subscription services as good a deal as ever. While typical grocery costs are up as much as 23% versus two years ago, most meal kit service consumer prices are only up about 5% or 10% since 2020. That raises the question: With inflation, are meal kits any more expensive than buying the same groceries? And if so, how much more expensive is a budget meal service such as EveryPlate or Dinnerly than buying the items yourself? Don't worry, I did the math. The biggest draw for meal kits has always been convenience since they measure all the ingredients and send them straight to your door, ready to be cooked for a healthy dinner. But it's a luxury that's factored into the overall cost. I wanted to see what that cost really was, so I priced out the expense of two meals from EveryPlate , my favorite cheap meal … [Read more...] about Meal Kits vs. Groceries: What’s Actually Cheaper? Best Android VPN 2023
If you have an Android device and you don't like the idea of your phone or apps giving away your geolocation data around the clock, using a reliable and well-tested VPN is a good idea. Will using a VPN get rid of all your privacy headaches? Definitely not. But the best Android VPN will provide you with whole-device protection so that your internet service provider can't view your browsing activity or app usage, Google can't see your geolocation, and your other apps' owners can't see what you're doing outside of their app . Mukbang and Hauls: The rise of super-indulgent eating and shopping videos
Let's eat! A petite young woman with pale skin and short hair braces herself for her next bite of food. A plate hovers directly in front of her mouth, holding five sauce-covered, finger-sized rice cakes (they look like tteokbokki , a popular Korean street food). She lines them up side-by-side with her chopsticks and slowly guides them all into her mouth. You can literally hear every bite, every chew that breaks down the rice cakes, every sniffle she makes as she tries to stop the sinus-relieving effects of the insanely spicy foods she's eating. She's talking into a small mic to her right, with one earbud in her right ear, as people watch her consume more food than her stomach should be able to handle—but she does so with a cheery attitude and the occasional smile. These kinds of videos are called mukbang videos, and believe it or not, they attract millions of viewers. Mukbang combines the Korean word for "eat" (muok-da) with the word for “broadcast” (bang song) and describes … [Read more...] about Mukbang and Hauls: The rise of super-indulgent eating and shopping videos
