Michael Abbott has overseen audio at the Grammys for decades. It’s an extremely high-pressure position, so I expected Abbot to have the personality to match. But when I met him in the hallways of a trade show last month, I immediately noticed that he carries a cool, laissez-faire demeanor. It’s disarming, which made it easy to forget how elite his resume is — at least until our conversation started. After pleasantries were exchanged, the first thing Abbott said caught me off guard. “I have a reputation preceding me,” he chuckled. “I’ve done so many amazing things, and have been involved in some debacles as well.” Not only has Abbott mixed and produced audio for shows like The Voice and Shark Tank, but he’s also done presidential debates and awards shows, such as the ESPYs, the Country Music Awards, and the Oscars. These are some of the most prestigious broadcasts on television, and it can be easy to forget how much work goes into … [Read more...] about Why the Grammys sound amazing and sometimes go wrong

iOS 12 Review: What’s now for what’s next
Smartphones and mobile operating systems were originally designed to converge the past. They replaced our phones, personal digital assistants, portable video and music players, gaming handhelds, and GPS units into one, small, always-connected package. And it was good. Now, smartphones and mobile operating systems are in a race for the future — not just to define it but to predict it. Surfaces can now read our fingerprints. Microphones can understand what we say. Cameras, who we are and what we're doing. Machines can also learn to anticipate what we'll do and want and when. Consequently, our devices have gone from reactively recording and retrieving only the information we've given them to trying to "know" us and proactively provide us with a range of information and services right before we realize we need them. At the same time, we live in an era where the largest internet companies in the world have told us our privacy is effectively dead — and are now being forced to … [Read more...] about iOS 12 Review: What’s now for what’s next
Ray Dalio says the economy looks like 1937 and a downturn is coming in about two years
Kara Chin, provided by Published 8:21 am PDT, Tuesday, September 18, 2018 Hedge fund legend Ray Dalio says the economy looks like it did in the late 1930s in many ways: interest rates hit zero in the early stage of each crisis, asset prices are near full capacity, interest rates are still low, the wealth gap has widened, populism is on the rise, and global tensions are rising. Dalio says: "We're in the later part of the cycle, the part of cycle in which monetary policy is tightening and there's not much capacity to squeeze out of the economy." He expects a downturn in roughly two years. Dalio says the way to handle the situation so we don't repeat the late '30s and '40s is to make sure that capitalism works for a majority of the people. Dalio goes on to say it's not just about a wealth gap but also an opportunity gap. He calls the issue a national emergency. Ray Dalio is the founder and co-chief investment officer of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge … [Read more...] about Ray Dalio says the economy looks like 1937 and a downturn is coming in about two years

Former Navy SEAL commanders who have been training business leaders for years realized too many people make the same mistake
Richard Feloni, provided by Published 6:12 am, Tuesday, April 10, 2018 Echelon Front Jocko Willink and Leif Babin are former Navy SEAL commanders who are publishing the sequel to their 2015 bestseller "Extreme Ownership" in September. It's called "The Dichotomy of Leadership." Willink and Babin have a leadership consulting company called Echelon Front, and Willink has a popular podcast. After "Extreme Ownership," they realized some people interpreted their advice to mean a good leader is aggressive and unforgiving — but neglected to balance that with a more measured approach. After their first book, 2015's "Extreme Ownership," became a New York Times bestseller, Navy SEAL commanders Jocko Willink and Leif Babin soon found themselves with a global fan base.
