By Rex Santus2015-01-01 17:15:30 UTC New Year's is the partiest holiday of them all, and ringing in the next calendar year naturally comes with a super late bed time. Jawbone, which manufactures fitness trackers that track sleeping patterns, released 2013 data charting users' average sleep times during last year's festivities. The results are based on "hundreds of thousands" of fitness-tracker wearers from all over the world. Of course, this information is only based on Jawbone's monitoring, so the study is limited in scope. Russia has the latest bed time of all countries accounted for in the data. Moscow has an average bed time of 3:43 a.m., while St. Petersburg comes in at 3:35 a.m. Russia's New Year's holiday is sometimes called a "super holiday," as some Christmas … [Read more...] about Which city partied the latest on New Year’s?
Scientists have designed a smart contact lens to measure the wearer’s blood sugar without using a needle. So far, the needle-less prototype has only been tested in rabbits — and it’s not clear if it’s even possible to accurately monitor blood sugar using tears. But if it works, it would be a massive upgrade for people with diabetes. The lens is made out of the same transparent, flexible material that’s in some soft contacts on the market. Inside, the researchers embedded electronics including a little LED light and a glucose sensor. If glucose levels rise above a certain level, the continuously lit LED light flickers off to alert the wearer, the researchers report today in the journal Science Advances. The scientists, led by Jang-Ung Park at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in the Republic of Korea, tested the contact lens using artificial tears spiked with sugar to mimic the low glucose levels measured in tears by earlier studies. … [Read more...] about The latest glucose-sensing smart contact lens still has a long way to go
The latest teaser for Avengers: Infinity War debuted during the Super Bowl tonight, and features all your favorite heroes from the various Marvel properties that have been piling and interlocking for the last 10 years. Black Panther is there, as is the original set of Avengers, as is the Guardians of the Galaxy crew, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. This should be fun and very confusing! They’re all teaming up to face down Thanos, the evil space god last seen in a post-credits scene from 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was fully introduced as a primary villain in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but his status as the big bad guy of the extended universe was hinted at in a post-credits scene for The Avengers in 2012. The showdown will extend into an untitled sequel due out in May 2019. This teaser follows the release of a full trailer back in November. The film will arrive in theaters … [Read more...] about The latest Avengers: Infinity War teaser packs a lot of heroes into 30 seconds
When you’re slicing your pie charts and adding up your spreadsheets, do you ever take a step back from your standing desk and ask yourself, “Am I getting enough Turbo time?” Vaio knows that feeling. That’s why its new Vaio S spec bump (as seen on AnandTech) was designed specifically to maximize how much Turbo you’re getting. The business laptop is mostly unchanged from last year’s model — the VGA port is still hanging on, and USB-C is still absent — but the internals have been bumped up to the latest 8th gen Intel processors. As fun as it is to say “Turbo time,” Vaio is actually very serious about this technology, which it dubs “Vaio TruePerformance.” Basically, it builds on Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, which allows for bursts of high performance from laptop CPUs. Unfortunately, the realities of power consumption and heat dissipation don’t let that performance spike last very long on a typical … [Read more...] about Maximize your Turbo time with the latest Vaio S
