Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Party’s rising socialist star, describes herself as “a girl from the Bronx” to project a working-class image. However, this claim is only half true – to borrow a phrase from the left-wing website PolitiFact. “Well, you know, the president is from Queens, and with all due respect — half of my district is from Queens — I don’t think he knows how to deal with a girl from the Bronx,” Ocasio-Cortez said this week on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She similarly told the Washington Post: “I wasn’t born to a wealthy or powerful family — mother from Puerto Rico, dad from the South Bronx. I was born in a place where your Zip code determines your destiny.” The congressional candidate, who pulled off an upset win against high-ranking establishment Rep. So what’s … [Read more...] about Fact Check: ‘Girl from the Bronx’ Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Grew Up in One of Richest U.S. Counties
A raging inferno engulfed several businesses in the Bronx early Tuesday, sending a black plume of smoke into the air as ferocious flames licked the gear of hundreds of firefighters working to put them out. The FDNY says the four-alarm fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. at 316 E. 194th Street, near Marion Avenue, in Fordham. About 250 firefighters and EMTs responded, authorities said. At least one of the multiple stores that caught fire was totally destroyed by the blaze, which still was not under control three hours after it broke out. The FDNY told News 4 at the scene that nobody was inside any of the burning stores. No injuries have been reported, but authorities urge anyone who lives in the area to close their windows because of the smoke. By Rex Santus2015-01-01 17:15:30 UTC New Year's is the partiest holiday of them all, and ringing in the next calendar year naturally comes with a super late bed time. Jawbone, which manufactures fitness trackers that track sleeping patterns, released 2013 data charting users' average sleep times during last year's festivities. The results are based on "hundreds of thousands" of fitness-tracker wearers from all over the world. Of course, this information is only based on Jawbone's monitoring, so the study is limited in scope. Russia has the latest bed time of all countries accounted for in the data. Moscow has an average bed time of 3:43 a.m., while St. Petersburg comes in at 3:35 a.m. Russia's New Year's holiday is sometimes called a "super holiday," as some Christmas … [Read more...] about Which city partied the latest on New Year’s?
