Planet of the Apps, Apple didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It slapped a new body on a well-worn vehicle — wannabe entrepreneurs pitching their precious ideas to a panel of questionable celebrity experts — and drove straight to “Meh-ville.” Throughout its history, Apple rarely moved into a particular market first. Whether it’s MP3 players, cellphones, tablets or smartwatches, Apple jumps onto an established concept, and then — should all go according to plan — executes better than everyone else. Planet of the Apps, Apple’s first original TV show for Apple Music, is as nailed down as any market Apple ever dived into. Planet of the Apps is Shark Tank for app developers, with all the behind-the-scenes sob stories, sharp putdowns and would-be feel-good moments that 20 years of reality TV turned into an art form. Planet of the Apps plays out in two distinct phases. At the beginning, developers get 60 seconds to pitch their idea to the … [Read more...] about With Planet of the Apps, Apple fails to crack the code for good TV [Review]
The app team
Apple has acquired automation app Workflow, which is one of the best productivity apps currently available on iOS, and the three-person developer team behind the app will be heading to Cupertino, California, to work on currently-unspecified projects for Apple. The acquisition has been closed for an undisclosed sum, TechCrunch reports, but unlike other similar scenarios where a tech giant buys out an app solely for the developer talent behind it and then shuts down the initial service, Apple plans on doing no such thing. In fact, not only will Workflow remain on the App Store, but it's also going free. This is a smart move on Apple's part, as Workflow is pretty much the only app of its kind on iOS. In short, Workflow is a personal automation tool that lets you combine actions via a drag and drop interface to create “workflows” of actions on your device. For example, you could set up a Workflow widget with a handful of buttons that let you perform complicated actions (like … [Read more...] about Apple bought excellent automation app Workflow and is making it free on the App Store
Back by popular demand. This old saying fits perfectly with the drama that swirled out of nowhere around WhatsApp's now infamous video status update. WhatsApp users, who seem to be a minimalistic bunch, or, rather, so used to a pretty barebones messaging app that every effort to dress it up seems like a blasphemy, did rebel against the video status update, as they felt WhatsApp would simply be copying Snap or Insta.Well, copying is all messaging apps do these days, and there is barely a feature introduced by some team that others don't pick up quickly. Even the unique proposition of Snapchat got replicated quickly after becoming popular, so too bad for those who participated in Snap's initial public offering, but at least the founders cashed out like bandits. WhatsApp, however, relented, and brought the text status update back, but only in the beta version of the app. Well, that feature is out of beta now, and the text status update is rolling out to the billion or so users of … [Read more...] about WhatsApp’s text status update now official in the app stores

Many avid gamers have often found themselves dreaming of having beta access to upcoming titles. Not so much to gain some feeling to exclusivity, but rather to give back to the gaming world, contributing their expertise to help create better titles for the future. Sadly, this dream is hardly ever realized. In the world of AAA titles, beta-testing teams are small groups of company-employed personnel, and in the world of mobile games, beta testing is often done by the developer and some of their friends.Well, so long as you are not looking to actually make any money out of it, you can now help developers clean their games up and deliver them as better titles in the App Store. The good news is that you will not be a full-fledged beta tester, trying to break the game or reproduce bugs – all that is required of you is to just play. Your session, along with screenshots and game-relevant information is relayed to the developer automatically. So, are you interested to get early access to … [Read more...] about How to gain access to and beta test games before they hit the App Store
