Elon Musk likes to keep himself busy. As CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and Hyperloop, he’s overseeing everything from launching a 12,000-satellite broadband network to building a NYC-to-DC hyperloop to installing computers in our brains. But with Tesla struggling to hit its production numbers for the new Tesla Model 3, Musk has stepped in place of his senior vice president of engineering to directly oversee manufacturing at the factory. Musk had previously tweeted that Tesla would hit 20,000 Model 3 cars manufactured per month by December of last year. He later amended his prediction, stating that by the end of 2018’s spring quarter, Tesla would produce 500 Model 3s per day, or 2,500 per week. After Jalopink exposed a company memo from Musk stating that the company could now make 2,000 cars per week, and The Information revealed that Musk had taken control of manufacturing, Musk responded angrily on Twitter, but didn’t contradict the claims. Subscribe to Modern Dad on YouTube! Priorities shift as we get older — and also when price tags shift exponentially. The need-it-right-this-second feeling you get from a smartphone — even one that costs a ridiculous $1,000 or so, as is the case with today's top-shelf devices — just isn't quite as pressing when you're paying mortgages and starting to give serious thought to your kids' college costs. Getting old sucks. Don't do it. But every now and then you get something that takes a look at that veil of responsibility, takes a peek inside, and then threatens to take both hands and just rip it the hell open. I remember that feeling with the Treo 750 in my late 20s. (Which, long story short, is the reason you're even reading this in the first place.) And for the past couple years I've had that same sort of feeling with a much more expensive toy — the Tesla Model 3. I'm only on my second car. My first was a 1985 BMW 325e that had more wrong with … [Read more...] about Modern Dad drives a Tesla Model 3!
Fun fact: a Tesla Model 3 preview was one of the first videos published by the MrMobile YouTube channel back in 2016 ... and I've never gotten over that experience. The skin-stretching acceleration; the futuristic features; the fact that it never needed a drop of gasoline – to a guy just starting a YouTube tech channel, Tesla's Model S and Model X were the ultimate manifestation of mobile technology, and the Model 3 promised much of the same experience in a more affordable package. Flash-forward to 2018, and that Tesla Model 3 is finally rolling off the production line. I had the chance to spend two days behind the wheel of the tricked-out trim with the premium interior, sport wheels, extended battery, and enhanced autopilot. That array of upgrades puts the car I drove at about the $57,000 mark (instead of the $35,000 entry-level trim coming later), and my two-day test drive was hardly enough time for a full review. Despite those compromises, though, I was able to get a sense of … [Read more...] about MrMobile’s Tesla Model 3 test drive (made him want a Model S)
Elon Musk announced via Twitter that he'd be taking over Tesla Model 3 production from former Apple exec Doug Field. This news comes as no surprise given Tesla's woes of late, with Model 3 production numbers being lower than anticipated, downgraded credit, slipping stock prices and a recent Autopilot-related fatal Model X crash.Field is being reassigned to the vehicle design team, according to Musk, where Musk says his talents would be better put to use. Field has been instrumental in his work at Tesla since coming on board in 2013. Currently, based on estimates, Model 3 production is around 20 percent below what it should be based on goals outlined during the most recent quarterly earnings call. The hope was that a new manufacturing line at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada would remove one of the production bottlenecks keeping the Model 3 from being produced at scale. In addition to delays in manufacturing, some owners who have received their Model 3s have been less than enthused with the … [Read more...] about Elon Musk takes charge of Tesla Model 3 production

Now all Tesla needs to do is build a half million of them. The car might not claim the mantle of the world’s first affordable, long-range EV: Chevrolet beat Tesla to market with its roughly US $37,000 Bolt, a car we roundly praised in last year’s Top 10 Tech Cars. But where the Bolt is essentially a peppy, utilitarian hatchback that happens to run on electricity, the Model 3 sedan has larger ambitions in design, performance, innovative interfaces, self-driving tech, charging infrastructure, and even production volumes. More than any previous Tesla, the Model 3 seems to herald a coming age of electrified transport for the masses. Traditional automaking giants—such … [Read more...] about 2018’s Top 10 Tech Cars: Tesla Model 3
