Google CEO Sundar Pichai today announced it will release a third-generation of its tensor processing unit that will be eight times faster than TPU chips released last year to help AI practitioners make larger, more accurate AI models. “These chips are so powerful that for the first time we’ve had to introduce liquid cooling in our data centers,” Pichai said. The news was announced onstage at I/O, Google’s annual developer conference being held Tuesday to Thursday at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. Pichai began to refer to Google as an AI-first company at I/O last year but artificial intelligence has been part of things at Google for some time now. First conceived at Google in 2013, tensor processing units (TPU), specialized chips for the inference of AI data, have been in use internally at Google since 2015 to do things like power Google Photos, Google search results or call on the Google Cloud Vision API. TPUs were first publicly … [Read more...] about Google to release third generation of its tensor processing units for faster AI

A loss for humanity! Man succumbs to machine! If you heard about AlphaGo’s latest exploits last week — crushing the world’s best Go player and confirming that artificial intelligence had mastered the ancient Chinese board game — you may have heard the news delivered in doomsday terms. There was a certain melancholy to Ke Jie’s capitulation, to be sure. The 19-year-old Chinese prodigy declared he would never lose to an AI following AlphaGo’s earthshaking victory over Lee Se-dol last year. To see him onstage last week, nearly bent double over the Go board and fidgeting with his hair, was to see a man comprehensively put in his place. But focusing on that would miss the point. DeepMind, the Google-owned company that developed AlphaGo, isn’t attempting to crush humanity — after all, the company is made up of humans itself. AlphaGo represents a major human achievement and the takeaway shouldn’t be that AI is surpassing our abilities, … [Read more...] about AI, the humanity!
Amazon has started designing a custom artificial intelligence chip that would power future Echo devices and improve the quality and response time of its Alexa voice assistant, according to a report today from The Information. The move closely follows rivals Apple and Google, both of which have already developed and deployed custom AI hardware at various scales. AI tasks, because they are so computationally intensive, often need custom-designed chips for the devices themselves and even custom-designed servers for data centers where AI algorithms are often trained, developed, and deployed from the cloud. While Amazon is unlikely to physically produce the chips, given its lack of both fabrication experience and a manufacturing presence in China, the news does pose a risk to the businesses of companies like Nvidia and Intel. Both companies have shifted large portions of their chipmaking expertise to AI and the future of the burgeoning field, and both make money by designing and … [Read more...] about Amazon is reportedly following Apple and Google by designing custom AI chips for Alexa
Google announced that it has released the Cloud TPU onto the Google Cloud Platform. The deployment is still in beta, but customers of Google’s cloud computing service can now use the company’s dedicated AI processing hardware for their own machine learning developments.TensorFlow framework, an open-source software library of high-level APIs that allow program workloads to be easily split across one or hundreds of TPUs. According to Google, TensorFlow implementations of popular machine learning algorithms can be dramatically sped up without code changes simply by allocating more TPUs towards them. What’s more, Google’s TPUs are available for virtual machine access. This means customers can have exclusive use of a TPU for real-time development, instead of only being able to submit jobs to a TPU compute farm.its “Cloud” TPU in mid 2017. The impetus behind what the company calls its tensor processing unit was the unsuitability of conventional CPUs for … [Read more...] about Google Deploys TPU To Google Cloud Service
When future historians of Silicon Valley look back at 2017, they’ll see a time when America’s most powerful tech companies and the venture capital ecosystem that created them came under unprecedented scrutiny from politicians and the public. The region’s innovation engine produced numerous technical advances, but controversy over fake news and revelations about sexual harassment of female entrepreneurs have cast a shadow over the Valley this year. Here’s a brief recap of some of the most significant developments. The Highs Big tech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area were busier than ever in 2017, and artificial intelligence was a top priority for many of them. Among a long list of AI initiatives, Google launched TensorFlow Lite, a lightweight version of its open-source machine-learning software that has accelerated AI adoption among companies. The new version enables AI to run on mobile phones and household gadgets such as fridges and speakers. … [Read more...] about Silicon Valley’s 2017 Report Card
