New Delhi: Google is in initial talks to buy a stake of about 5% in cash-strapped Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest telecom operator, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Vodafone Idea was formed in August 2017 by the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The telco, which has been posting losses since the merger, declined to comment on “this speculation”. Both UK’s Vodafone Group and Idea parent Aditya Birla Group declined to comment. Google didn’t respond to ET’s queries. Voda Idea shares closed 2.7% higher at Rs 5.82 on the BSE Thursday, giving it a market value of Rs 16,724 crore. For a 5% stake, Google will have to shell out $110 million (Rs 836.2 crore) based on that. Its Nasdaq-listed parent Alphabet has a market cap of $968.05 billion. NEW DELHI: Telecom operator Airtel has entered into a partnership with Nokia. As part of the multi-year agreement, the telco will deploy Nokia’s SRAN solution across 9 telecom circles. With this new agreement in place, Airtel aims to improve the 4G network capacity and customer experience. The rollout, which will also lay the foundation for providing 5G connectivity in the future, will see approximately 300,000 radio units deployed across several spectrum bands, including 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, 2100 Mhz, and 2300 Mhz, and is expected to be completed by 2022. Nokia’s SRAN solution help telecom operators manage their 2G, 3G, and 4G networks from one platform reducing network complexity, increasing cost efficiencies, and future-proofing investment. NEW DELHI: Handset makers have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Ministry of Home Affairs to include mobile handsets in the list of essential products. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has already recommended inclusion of mobile phones and other related products in the "essential goods" category. “We request for your kind direction to the MHA on this very important recommendation from the Industry which is duly considered and approved by the Crisis management structure set up you i.e. the Empowered Group of Technology and Data Management,” Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said a letter date April 21.
