The search giant announced in its ad policies change log that advertisers will once again be able to advertise cryptocurrency exchanges, a reversal of a policy Google instituted earlier this year. There are some caveats. Google will only allow ads for regulated exchanges of digital currencies, while still prohibiting ads for other cryptocurrency products. Advertisers trying to sell crypto wallets and trading advice will still be turned away by the company, according to CNBC.In addition, Google will only accept cryptocurrency exchange ads in the United States and Japan from certified advertisers in those countries. Exclusive — House Technology Chair: Google’s Drone Contract Refusal ‘Awfully Close to Being Un-American’
Google’s decision to not renew its artificial intelligence contract with the Pentagon “comes awfully close to being un-American,” says Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX), chair of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. Google employees “basically threatened the management who immediately rolled over,” Smith told Breitbart News in a wide-ranging interview.“The employees said, ‘Well we don’t want to do anything that will help the military in any way. We have some indirect contracts with the military where we give them some information and we want to stop that’.” “Of course, it took the management a millisecond, well actually a few hours, to roll over and capitulate,” Smith added. The Hill, last month “Google, facing internal pressure, told employees… that it would not renew its contract with the Defense Department’s flagship AI program, known as Project Maven, after it … [Read more...] about Exclusive — House Technology Chair: Google’s Drone Contract Refusal ‘Awfully Close to Being Un-American’
Good news: Google’s Android P can halve photo sizes. Bad news: Not on lower-end phones
The good news is that the next version of Google's Android smartphone software, Android P, has a feature to shrink your photos to half the size of an ordinary JPEG. The bad news is there's no guarantee that every phone will actually be able to use it.That's because of hardware and patent licensing limits on the technology used, called High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF). To get full benefits, phone makers will have to pay for high-end hardware and license patents to use it.You may have heard the term last year, when Apple was championing the technology in iOS 11 and its latest iPhones. Now Google's coming around to it. Halving the amount of storage space that photos consume -- and the amount of data they siphon off your monthly network plan when you're sharing or syncing -- is a great benefit. But it's still not clear how well HEIF will deliver that benefit for Android users. On iPhones, Apple made sure its chips can handle HEIF and resolved the patent hassles. But all bets … [Read more...] about Good news: Google’s Android P can halve photo sizes. Bad news: Not on lower-end phones
Google in 2018: Trying to do everything
It’s been a rocky 2017 for the tech sector. Business boomed across the board, making tech giants richer and more powerful than ever, as their products became even more indispensable to our daily lives. Like any addiction though, our dependence on tech has a dark side, and in 2017, the dark side was more visible than ever. Google had it easier than Facebook, Uber, Twitter or even Apple, but it still had to deal with issues like fake news, the proliferation of toxic and abusive content on its platforms, sexism in the workplace, and accusations of tax avoidance.Against this background, Google improved and expanded its panoply of services, continued to focus on artificial intelligence, and made steps towards establishing itself as a first-hand consumer hardware company. Let’s take a look at Google’s 2017 and what to expect in the year to come. AI everywhere Google’s initial mission statement was to organize the world’s information and make it universally … [Read more...] about Google in 2018: Trying to do everything
Looks Like Google Found a Buyer for Zagat
In early January, a report surfaced that detailed Google’s desire to sell off Zagat. According to the latest news, Google has found a buyer. As detailed, The Infatuation has reached an agreement with Google to take possession of Zagat, though, no financials of the deal have been disclosed. If you’re unfamiliar with The Infatuation, it’s a grub finder service that can pair you up with a dining experience in many cities across the world. Stated by The Infatuation, they will maintain Zagat as a separate brand, “while expanding its user surveys and developing a new technology platform for the brand.” If we ever do get financial information on this deal, keep in mind that Google paid $151 million for Zagat back in 2011. Who’s to say if Mountain View got its money’s worth. // Bloomberg … [Read more...] about Looks Like Google Found a Buyer for Zagat
