With virtual reality (VR) sizzling in every electronic fair, there is a need for displays with higher resolution, frame rates, and power efficiency. Now, a joint collaboration of researchers from SCALE Nanotech, Graphenea, and TU Delft have used graphene to make reflective-type displays that operate faster and at much higher resolution than existing technologies. Displays consume the most power in electronic gadgets. Portable devices like smartphones and VR visors therefore require most of the energy from batteries. As an alternative solution, reflective-type displays (like those in e-book readers) consume little power, though they cannot deliver video. Reflective displays that offer the specifications of standard technologies (OLED, LCD) do not exist yet. The good news is that graphene makes this possible. Graphene, a monolayer of carbon atoms, is the thinnest, strongest material and the best electrical conductor, an ideal combination for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). … [Read more...] about New Graphene Technology Enhances Electronic Displays
automatic alert system that helps people get rid of their unhealthy habit by sending video messages. The mobile application, which is available only on Android (News - Alert) for the time being, sends 20 to 120 motivational video messages to users when the sensors, which are coupled with advanced information, identify specific arm and body movements. As opposed to conventional treatments, such as adhering to medications, wearable sensor technology helps quitting smoking as a process, offering advantages such as nonstop visibility and transparency, automated remote monitoring, and real-time impact. The product was designed by the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science researchers at Case Western Reserve University. It was conceived, developed, and tested over a long period of time. The results are impressive. The system is capable of making the difference between smoking and other hand-to-mouth activities like eating or drinking. The technology-enhanced solution for smoking … [Read more...] about Novel Technology to Help People Quit Smoking

By Mikey Campbell Tuesday, March 27, 2018, 02:14 pm PT (05:14 pm ET) Apple Watch is predicted to get its first redesign since launching in 2015, according to noted KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who expects the device to also feature a larger display, extended battery life and upgraded health monitoring features. Kuo aired his predictions in a note to investors on Tuesday, saying the "Apple Watch Series 4" will boast a "more trendy form factor design" than the rounded square format introduced three years ago and carried through to today, reports 9to5Mac. Notably, Apple is planning to boost screen size by 15 percent, a major increase that will likely translate to a larger overall chassis. Currently available in 38mm and 42mm flavors, a 15 percent bump would bring display size in "Apple Watch Series 4" up to a respective 1.54 inches and 1.76 inches on the diagonal. If case size increases in step with the screen, users can expect a bump to 44mm and 48mm, respectively, though Apple could … [Read more...] about Redesigned Apple Watch with larger screen, enhanced battery life and health features due in Q3
With the award-winning Ready Player One book about to be released as a Steven Spielberg movie, now seemed like a good time to look at the science behind the O.A.S.I.S. and whether our current technology is even close to replicating the wonders of this story. Let's take a look at individual technologies that comprise Ernie Cline's vision, as well as taking a close up look at the software that powers the O.A.S.I.S. and the many planets and people that live, work and play in its digital universe. See on Amazon Hardware A lot of the hardware that Wade Watts, the protagonist, uses seems to be within the reach of this decade. From Haptic gloves to 360 treadmills, there a lot of start-ups working to bring these technologies to life. The O.A.S.I.S. Computer I grabbed my OASIS console, a flat black rectangle about the size of a paperback book. The OASIS Computer in the book is a seriously powerful piece of hardware. Capable of storing every movie, book, and video game ever made and running … [Read more...] about How close are we to the technology of Ready Player One?
