Max Stier, the man behind a new sexual misconduct allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, was not only a former classmate of Kavanaugh’s at Yale but also a foe during the Bill Clinton impeachment trial. Stier, 53, served on the team defending Clinton, while Kavanaugh served on Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr’s team that was investigating Clinton. As Yale Daily News put it: In 1994, Kavanaugh joined the legal team, led by Kenneth Starr, that was looking into President Bill Clinton’s real estate dealings as part of the Whitewater investigation. Later that decade, Kavanaugh co-wrote the Starr Report, which established broad grounds for Clinton’s impeachment. Those proceedings pitted Kavanaugh against a former Yale classmate, Max Stier ’87, a fellow member of Stiles College who was one of several attorneys representing Clinton during the investigation. The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway noted in a piece that during those proceedings Stier had “worked … [Read more...] about Kavanaugh’s Accuser Max Stier Is Former Clinton Lawyer, Obama Donor

DirecTV dumps Newsmax instead of paying new fee, drawing Republican outrage
Newsmax is no longer on DirecTV, as the satellite video provider today said it decided not to renew an expiring deal because of Newsmax's money demands. "On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network, but ultimately Newsmax's demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base," DirecTV said in a statement provided to Ars. (AT&T owns 70 percent of DirecTV.) The carriage deal expired at midnight last night. The "rate increase" demanded by Newsmax was actually from a base of $0 because DirecTV didn't have to pay Newsmax to carry the network under their now-expired deal, a DirecTV spokesperson told Ars. DirecTV says it was one of the first pay-TV providers to carry Newsmax starting in 2014. While DirecTV described it as a financial decision, Newsmax accused DirecTV of discrimination and censorship. "This is a blatant act of political discrimination … [Read more...] about DirecTV dumps Newsmax instead of paying new fee, drawing Republican outrage
Hunter Biden’s Reported Art Earnings over 5 Times More than Average
Hunter Biden’s reported artwork earnings of $375,000, after painting five pieces, are five times more than the national average salary of an American artist. According to Indeed, the average base yearly wage of an artist is $73,013. In 2021, reports indicate Hunter sold five paintings to anonymous buyers for $75,000 each. It is unclear if Hunter sold any art in 2022 after critics raised concerns Hunter’s sales happened simply because he is the president’s son. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) told Breitbart News in 2022 he is “95 percent sure” the buyers of Hunter’s art are Chinese buyers, potentially implicating president Joe Biden. “How is Hunter Biden one of the highest-paid artists in America?” Comer asked Thursday. “The Biden family is continuing to profit from Joe Biden’s position as a public official.” Comer has requested Hunter’s art dealer, Georges Bergès, testify before Congress. In a Wednesday letter, the chairman questioned … [Read more...] about Hunter Biden’s Reported Art Earnings over 5 Times More than Average
Mitch McConnell: Biden’s Recent Aid to Ukraine Is ‘Overdue’
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Wednesday said that President Joe Biden’s latest aid package to Ukraine is “overdue.” “Well, I was happy to learn yesterday and this morning that, indeed, both the White House and their counterparts in Germany are finally moving forward with these overdue steps,” McConnell said in a floor speech in the United States Senate. “I have consistently called on the Biden Administration to be more proactive and to lead by example in delivering lethal aid like long-range weapons with greater urgency,” he added. “Germany has announced it will supply Ukraine with an initial 14 Leopard 2 tanks, and the Biden Administration is expected to send at least 30 M1 Abrams tanks, as well.” “Of course, as we rush these long-overdue capabilities to Ukraine, the West’s work is far from over,” McConnell explained, before acknowledging that “These drawdowns of Western arsenals must also prompt serious work to expand the capacity of our defense … [Read more...] about Mitch McConnell: Biden’s Recent Aid to Ukraine Is ‘Overdue’
Manhattan DA demands Congress require mobile phone backdoors
Cyrus Vance, Jr., the Manhattan district attorney and an outspoken critic of encryption, called on Congress to adopt legislation mandating that mobile phone makers like Apple and Google bake backdoors into their smartphones. Vance said it is "government's principal responsibility to keep its residents safe, and that a government cannot fulfill that responsibility if huge amounts of vital information directly related to public safety are inaccessible to the government." Further Reading This is the most outrageous government tirade against iOS 8 encryption The district attorney's proposal provided data saying that in a span of 12 months ending in October, as many as 111 prosecutions in his office for a variety of crimes like homicide, attempted murder, sexual abuse of a child, sex trafficking, assault, and robbery were hindered because of encrypted mobile phones connected to the cases. He also cited a litany of prosecutions in which evidence obtained from mobile phones … [Read more...] about Manhattan DA demands Congress require mobile phone backdoors
Appliance makers sad that 50% of customers won’t connect smart appliances
Appliance makers like Whirlpool and LG just can't understand. They added Wi-Fi antennae to their latest dishwashers, ovens, and refrigerators and built apps for them—and yet only 50 percent or fewer of their owners have connected them. What gives? The issue, according to manufacturers quoted in a Wall Street Journal report (subscription usually required), is that customers just don't know all the things a manufacturer can do if users connect the device that spins their clothes or keeps their food cold—things like "providing manufacturers with data and insights about how customers are using their products" and allowing companies to "send over-the-air updates" and "sell relevant replacement parts or subscription services." “The challenge is that a consumer doesn’t see the true value that manufacturers see in terms of how that data can help them in the long run. So they don’t really care for spending time to just connect it,” Henry Kim, US director of LG's smart device division … [Read more...] about Appliance makers sad that 50% of customers won’t connect smart appliances
Dershowitz: A Technological Solution to the Classification Problem
Classified documents have now been found among the papers of former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden, and former Vice President Mike Pence. There is little doubt that if the offices, basements, garages and libraries of all former presidents and vice presidents were searched, more classified material would turn up. There’s little evidence that officials who previously had access to classified material made deliberate decisions to keep them, knowing they were classified. There are exceptions, of course, such as former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, who willfully secreted secret material in his socks, in order to help him prepare his memoir. It is far more likely that when classified material ends up in the files of former officials, it was as a result of unawareness, sloppiness, carelessness or inadvertence. But regardless of how or why such material ends up in unsecured areas, a national security threat may exist. There may be a technological solution or … [Read more...] about Dershowitz: A Technological Solution to the Classification Problem
