The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been officially announced, and this fully electric, mid-size CUV (crossover SUV) comes with a raft of tech as standard – and even more as options, including solar panels on its roof. Originally seen at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 45 EV concept, the car had seen a few design tweaks to get it to its current form – the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Its distinctive angular shape is a throwback to the firm's first mass-produced car, the 1974 Pony, and boasts huge 20-inch wheels, a clam-shell hood and eye-catching pixel lights on the front, plus dot matrix lights on the rear. CSIRO paints why Australia needs its own national space capability
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has advised the Standing Committee of Industry, Innovation, Science and Resources, as part of its inquiry into developing Australia's space industry that there are warranted reasons for Australia, to have its own national space capability. Fronting the committee on Wednesday, CSRIO executive director of digital, national facilities and collections David Williams said CSIRO's advice is that if Australia wants access to timely data, it would be only possible if the country owned its own satellites. "The way to look at it is if you have applications that demand specific timely data or ephemeral data as you're developing the outcome and you don't own the satellite, it can be very difficult to get the satellite to switch on and off at the time you want to over the location you need it because there's competition slots," he said. "For example, geological mapping doesn't change that often, so you have less need for … [Read more...] about CSIRO paints why Australia needs its own national space capability
SolarWinds, Microsoft, FireEye, CrowdStrike defend actions in major hack: US Senate hearing
Top executives at Texas-based software company SolarWinds Corp, Microsoft Corp and cybersecurity firms FireEye Inc and CrowdStrike Holdings Inc defended their conduct in breaches blamed on Russian hackers and sought to shift responsibility elsewhere in testimony to a U.S. Senate panel. One of the worst hacks yet discovered had an impact on all four. SolarWinds and Microsoft programs were used to attack others and the hack struck at about 100 U.S. companies and nine federal agencies. Lawmakers started the hearing by criticizing Amazon representatives, who they said were invited to testify and whose servers were used to launch the cyberattack, for declining to attend the hearing. "I think they have an obligation to cooperate with this inquiry, and I hope they will voluntarily do so," said Senator Susan Collins, a Republican. "If they don't, I think we should look at next steps." The executives argued for greater transparency and information-sharing about breaches, … [Read more...] about SolarWinds, Microsoft, FireEye, CrowdStrike defend actions in major hack: US Senate hearing
Apple iMac may come in different colour options
It seems that after iPad Air 4 , the next product category in which Apple may introduce a range of colour options is going to be iMac, the desktop computers from the Cupertino-based tech giant. According to Jon Prosser — the YouTuber who has been often correct when it comes to giving tips about what Apple is working on — the company is going to use the same colours as the fourth-generation iPad Air from last year for its next iMac models. If this happens to be the case, we could have the new 2021 iMac models in space gray, silver, rose gold, green, and sky blue colour options. As per Prosser, this move to introduce colour options in the iMac models will strike the chord with those who loved the original iMac models that were available in colours like lime, strawberry, blueberry, grape, and tangerine back in the 90s. Last month, a report by Bloomberg had suggested that the 2021 iMac models may come with smaller bezels and sport a design similar to the … [Read more...] about Apple iMac may come in different colour options
Texas power outages: Why blackouts hit as temperatures fell
Texas' power grid was on the verge of failure after a cold snap brought record low temperatures, snow and rolling blackouts across the state. Millions of Texans were without power, and some people have questioned why a state that produces the most power in the US is unable to keep the lights on. Misinformation about the blackout has also started to spread online, falsely putting the blame on wind and solar energy. Roughly 4 million people in Texas had to deal with outages for most of the week as power generators and natural gas pipes froze, crippling the state's production capabilities. This led the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages the state's power grid, to administer rolling blackouts to avoid a grid failure. ERCOT ended the emergency conditions Friday because no more outages were required. Smarten up Get the best reviews, videos and comparisons in CNET's Smart Home and Appliances newsletter.
