For the 18 or more journalists kidnapped by pro-Gadhafi forces in Libya, detention may be only the beginning of their ordeal. War correspondents are at high risk of post-traumatic stress disorder , with some studies putting the rate of PTSD among reporters in conflict zones at 25 percent or more. And while there are some protective factors — including journalists' ability to share their stories of trauma — the number of freelancers who lack strong support systems and are working in ever more dangerous areas is increasing, said Elana Newman, a University of Tulsa psychology professor. "In areas of conflict, it used to be that journalists were seen as the neutral party and they were protected," Newman told LiveScience. "In the last few years, journalists have become explicit targets of violence ." Newman is research director for the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma, an online resource for journalists who cover violence. The computer as we know it today has radically evolved from the desktop behemoths of the early PCs to masses of computer power you can hold in your hand. Desktop PCs , notebooks, tablets and smartphones now all coexist together, but are clearly on a converging trajectory. And increasingly, computers are not simply isolated pieces of IT we use. With the burgeoning ideas of the Internet of Things becoming tangible reality, computers will simply disappear into our environment. Says Andy Hardy, EMEA MD at Code42: "The iconic image of a 'computer' in the traditional sense – the idea of a tower that sits underneath a desk connected to a monitor – is outdated. Today, our computers are as mobile as we are. This concept of an electronic device – which is capable of receiving data and processing information in order to produce a result – being carried with you wherever you go is not going away anytime soon." Jon Wrennall, CTO in the UK and Ireland at Fujitsu, further commented: "The … [Read more...] about What does the future hold for the PC?
Microsoft has continued its analysis of the LemonDuck malware , known for installing crypto-miners in enterprise environments. It makes a strong case for why it is worth removing it from your network. This group, according to Microsoft, has a well-stocked arsenal of hacking tools, tricks and exploits aimed at one thing: for their malware to retain exclusive access to a compromised network for as long as possible. While crypto-mining malware could be just a nuisance, LemonDuck attributes suggest the attacker group really do try to own compromised networks by disabling anti-malware, removing rival malware, and even automatically patching vulnerabilities -- a competitive effort to keep rival attackers from feeding off its turf. "This allows them to limit the visibility of the attack to [security operations center] analysts within an organization who might be prioritizing unpatched devices for investigation, or who would overlook devices that do not have a high volume of malware … [Read more...] about Microsoft: This Windows and Linux malware does everything it can to stay on your network

Central banks and financial regulators urgently need to get to grips with the growing influence of 'Big Tech', according to top officials from central bank umbrella group the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Global watchdogs are increasing wary that the huge amounts of data controlled by groups such as Facebook, Google, Amazon and Alibaba could allow them to reshape finance so rapidly that it destabilises entire banking systems. In a paper led by its head Agustin Carstens, the BIS pointed to examples such as China where the two big tech payment firms now account for 94% of the mobile payments market. In many other jurisdictions, tech firms are rapidly establishing footprints too, with some also lending to individuals and small businesses as well as offering insurance and wealth management services. "The entry of big techs into financial services gives rise to new challenges surrounding the concentration of market power and data governance," the BIS paper … [Read more...] about realme india: Financial regulators urgently need to get a grip on ‘Big Tech’: BIS
