Newsom makes health care the centerpiece of California’s resistance to Trump
For California under Gov. Gavin Newsom, the resistance to President Donald Trump is about health care. Much as his predecessor Jerry Brown made climate change the state’s big challenge to Trump, Newsom has embarked on a health agenda that includes extending care to undocumented adults and direct government negotiation of drug prices.Story Continued Below Unlike the other 2020 candidates pushing universal health care, Newsom’s policies aren’t just theoretical Washington talk, so there’s much more at risk. If his innovations in expanding Obamacare, extending Medicaid to undocumented immigrants — itself a jab at Trump’s hard-line immigration policies — and negotiating lower drug prices work, he could emerge as a hero of the Democratic Party. His policies could be templates for candidates pushing ahead on universal health care — an aspiration shared by Democrats even if they are still divided on what specific policies to pursue and how … [Read more...] about Newsom makes health care the centerpiece of California’s resistance to Trump
Nvidia Inception’s AI health care startups cover neural interfaces to better MRI
More than 200 artificial intelligence startups applied for Nvidia’s Inception contest, which seeks to identify the best AI startups in key areas. The company created the program to find new uses for its graphics processing units (GPUs), but it’s also hoping these startups will change the world. So far, the company has identified more than 2,800 AI startups over the years through Inception. I listened to pitches from 12 finalists in a Shark Tank-styled judging event last week. Each contestant is competing to be one of three finalists to share the $1 million prize pool. “We’re trying to enable our ecosystem of deep learning neural networks,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, as he introduced a panel of four judges. The 12 semi-finalists gave their eight-minute pitches, six finalists were selected, and the final winners will be picked at the company’s GPU Technology Conference on March 27 in San Jose, California. The pitches ranged … [Read more...] about Nvidia Inception’s AI health care startups cover neural interfaces to better MRI

HP launches sanitizable laptops and displays for health care
HP is announcing a new line of sanitizable and secure laptops, displays, and all-in-one desktops aimed at health care workers in hospitals and clinics. The new laptops are designed to be easily cleaned with germicidal wipes, without the worry that moisture will damage the electronics. The products address the problem of health care-associated infections (HAIs), which result in 1.7 million illnesses in the U.S. each year — and 99,000 deaths. The security aspects of the new products address the problem of health care data breaches, which cost $6.2 billion a year, according to market researcher Protenus. The laptops have integrated radio frequency identification (RFID) readers for single sign-on authentication, allowing workers to sign in by tapping their badges on the laptop’s touchpad. It also has fingerprint identification. HP announced the products at the HIMSS18 health care event.
