This Week in Elon This Week in Elon is a limited-run newsletter that is occasionally revived when there’s Too Much News. And right there, this is Too Much News. You can subscribe here . This Week In Elon, we’re talking about M&A again — but this time, we mean mergers and acquisitions — not marriages and affairs . The Delaware Court of Chancery handed Elon Musk an unfavorably speedy schedule last month in his ongoing fight to not buy Twitter, and now we’ve got specific dates for the trial : Elon and Twitter will square off from October 17th to October 21st. That leaves two and a half months for both parties to fight over what evidence they’ll get to introduce, and Twitter has already started digging — while Musk has been preparing a counterstrike with whatever dirt he’s already got. As The Washington Post and the newsletter The Chancery Daily reported earlier this week, Twitter has cast a broad net of subpoenas over Musk’s business dealings. amazon: US recession: Why Apple and Amazon results are important
Apple and Amazon added about $175 billion to their combined market value after upbeat results boosted investor confidence on the ability of these firms to weather a slowdown in the economy. While analysts noted these companies were not completely immune to broader economic hurdles, they said the weakness in consumer spending is not likely to send these firms into the red, deeming them "always reliable to buck the trend." , Amazon's shares rose about 11 percent to $135.50 after the e-commerce titan forecast upbeat third-quarter revenue, while those of Apple rose more than 3 percent as the company said appetite for iPhones remained strong despite consumers' tightening spending. "The results are good enough to support Apple's stock, which has done much better in the current market rout, further justifying the company's "safe haven" status when the going gets tough," Haris Anwar , Investing.com analyst, said. The US stock market's hyper surge in the past … [Read more...] about amazon: US recession: Why Apple and Amazon results are important
Tesla faces new probes into motorbike deaths, false advertising
Tesla went into the weekend with a fresh pair of headaches. On Friday, the Associated Press reported that the federal government is investigating whether or not the company's Autopilot system can safely recognize motorcyclists after a pair of fatal crashes in July. And the Los Angeles Times reported that California is unhappy with the way the automaker has advertised its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving driver assist technologies. Can Autopilot see motorbikes at night? The first fatal crash occurred in the early hours of July 7 in Riverside, California, when a Tesla Model Y on State Route 91 hit a motorcycle from behind, killing its rider. The second fatal motorcycle crash occurred on July 24, again at night, this time on I-15 outside Draper, Utah. In that case, a Tesla Model 3 was driving behind a motorcycle and hit it, killing the rider. The AP reports that the California Highway Patrol is still investigating whether Autopilot was active in the first crash, but the driver in … [Read more...] about Tesla faces new probes into motorbike deaths, false advertising

Editor's Note: July 2022 We're rounding the halfway mark on 2022, and this year's best ultrawide monitor models are starting to fill up store shelves, both the physical and digital kind. It's also a time to wave goodbye to some discontinued monitors, like the BenQ EX3510R, which was one of our favorite ultrawide monitors on this list. Fortunately, BenQ has released the EX3410R, which is a slightly smaller but more capable ultrawide than the EX3510R. It is much faster, both in refresh and pixel response, and has slightly better contrast and brightness as well. Best of all, it's a good deal less expensive, so you're getting a much better value any way you look at it. - John Loeffler, US Computing Editor Getting the best ultrawide monitor you can afford will probably feel like a bit of a flex for a lot of people, a way to make a statement more than serve a purpose. Rumors, delays, and early testing suggest Intel’s Arc GPUs are on shaky ground
Almost a year ago, Intel made a big announcement about its push into the dedicated graphics business. Intel Arc would be the brand name for a new batch of gaming GPUs, pushing far beyond the company's previous efforts and competing directly with Nvidia's GeForce and AMD's Radeon GPUs. Arc is the culmination of years of work, going back to at least 2017, when Intel poached AMD GPU architect Raja Koduri to run its own graphics division . And while Intel would be trying to break into an established and fiercely competitive market, it would benefit from the experience and gigantic install base that the company had cultivated with its integrated GPUs. California law enforcement moves to buy drones, draws controversy
Since Congress passed legislation in February ordering the Federal Aviation Administration to fast-track the approval of unmanned aerial vehicles—more colloquially known as drones—for use by law enforcement agencies, police and sheriff departments across the country have been scrambling to purchase the smaller, unarmed cousins of the Predator and Reaper drones which carry out daily sorties over Afghanistan, Yemen, and other theaters of operation. Alameda County in California has become one of the central battlegrounds over the introduction of drones to domestic police work. Earlier this year , Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern raised the hackles of local civil libertarians (and there are quite a few of those in the county, which encompasses Berkeley and Oakland) by declaring his intention to purchase a drone to assist with “emergency response.” According to Ahern, Alameda Sheriff's personnel first tested a UAV in fall 2011 and gave a public demonstration of the machine's … [Read more...] about California law enforcement moves to buy drones, draws controversy
