Huawei ban timeline: Chinese company may start making electric vehicles this year

· March 3, 2021 ·

Huawei is a global telecommunications supplier and phone manufacturer, but it remains a pariah in countries like the US. There's been a huge amount of scrutiny of the Chinese company in recent years, and countries like the UK and Sweden have banned the use of its equipment in their 5G networks. Huawei's phones are also virtually invisible in the US despite their huge popularity around the world. The company's chairman predicted that 2020 would be "difficult" for Huawei, and there certainly were challenges. The US continued to pressure allies to block Huawei from their next-generation 5G wireless networks. In July, the UK banned Huawei from its 5G infrastructure: The company's equipment must be removed by 2027 -- a decision that Huawei found "disappointing" as 5G becomes increasingly mainstream -- and UK carriers will be unable to install Huawei 5G gear starting in September 2021 . Starship goes up. Starship goes down. But is the program moving forward?

· March 4, 2021 ·

So what, exactly, are we to make of the third flight of a full-scale Starship prototype? If nothing else, Wednesday afternoon's flight provided several minutes of first-rate entertainment: Rocketship goes up. Rocketship comes down. Rocketship lands. And then, with an incredible plot twist 10 minutes later, rocketship briefly ascends again and then blows up. It all looked remarkable. Like many of the most inspiring things SpaceX has accomplished over the last decade, this launch, landing, and subsequent explosion looked almost otherworldly. It felt like a peek into the future, a glimpse of something yet unseen, that might yet be. Further Reading Putting the latest Starship crash into perspective—it’s “stupidly difficult” SpaceX founder and chief engineer Elon Musk seemed pleased after the flight. "SpaceX team is doing great work! One day, the true measure of success will be that Starship flights are commonplace," he tweeted . So the Starship program is clearly … [Read more...] about Starship goes up. Starship goes down. But is the program moving forward?

Researchers build a swimming robot that works in the Mariana Trench

· March 3, 2021 ·

Remotely operated vehicles have changed how we explore and exploit the ocean. They can operate for far longer than human-occupied vehicles, go into areas where risk would dictate people avoid, and reach depths where very few craft can take a human. But even so, a lot of the hardware gets taken up by an enclosure that's capable of protecting things like batteries and electronics from the pressures of the deep. But that may not be entirely necessary, based on a report in today's Nature. In it, a team of Chinese researchers describe adapting hardware so that it could operate a soft-bodied robot in the deep ocean. The researchers then gave the robot a ride 10 kilometers down in the Mariana Trench and showed that it worked. Going soft Mention robots, and for many people, the first thing that comes to mind are the collections of metal and cabling that make up things like the dancing Atlases from Boston Dynamics. But over the last decade, plenty of researchers have demonstrated that … [Read more...] about Researchers build a swimming robot that works in the Mariana Trench
