In brief: Rumors that a future Apple Watch will include a slew of new health-focused features, including blood glucose monitoring, have been circulating for years. Now, a recent filing suggests the wearable really could offer a non-invasive way of measuring blood sugars, as well as blood pressure and even alcohol levels. According to The Daily Telegraph , an SEC filing by UK health tech startup Rockley Photonics reveals that Apple has been its largest customer over the last two years, and it has an ongoing “supply and development agreement” with Cupertino. Rockley develops sensors able to detect various blood levels, including glucose, by firing infrared light through the skin. The filing lends credence to reports from January that claimed Apple and Samsung are working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring for their respective wearables. Conditions such as type 1 diabetes, which affects this writer, require checking blood glucose levels many times every day. It usually … [Read more...] about Future Apple Watch could measure blood glucose, pressure, and alcohol levels

A while ago we heard a rumor that the Apple Watch 7 might be able to monitor your blood sugar , and while a new report suggests that it probably won’t, it looks quite likely that the Apple Watch 8 will have the feature on board. That’s according to The Telegraph (a UK newspaper) which found in filings from the SEC (the US Securities and Exchange Commission) that Apple is the biggest customer of Rockley Photonics – a company that focuses on sensors that track blood sugar, blood pressure, and alcohol levels. On top of that, the CEO of Rockley Photonics has reportedly claimed that its technology would be in consumer products from 2022. They didn’t specifically say an Apple product, but with Apple being responsible for the majority of Rockley Photonics’ revenue over the past two years, that seems likely. When you pour a glass of beer, a frothy cascade of fizz rises to the top; as more and more tiny bubbles coalesce, they form a nose-tickling layer of foam. At first, that frothy stream of carbonation seems endless. But just how many bubbles can emerge from a glass of beer before it goes flat? Gérard Liger-Belair, a professor of chemical physics at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne in France, had previously explored this effervescent subject in Champagne, calculating that one flute produces about 1 million bubbles. Recently, Liger-Belair peered into the depths of beer glasses and found that they produce twice as many bubbles as Champagne — with up to 2 million bubbles popping in a half-pint glass, according to a new study. Related: When was beer invented? Archaeological evidence shows that people have been brewing and drinking beer for at least 5,000 years and possibly for as long as 13,000 years, Liger-Belair and co-author Clara Cilindre, an associate … [Read more...] about How many bubbles are in a glass of beer?
Just as America's stash of black-market Four Loko dwindles, a new form of intoxicating soda has risen like a phoenix from its ashes: pot-laced soda. But while Four Loko has been recalled amid reports of alcohol poisoning and accidental deaths , the worst side effect of overdoing it with marijuana soda might just be a really bad tummy ache. California-based entrepreneur Clay Butler has developed a line of cannabis soft drinks that will hit the shelves of medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado in February and California in the spring. Each 12-ounce beverage which will come in such varieties as Canna Cola, Doc Weed and Orange Kush will contain 35 to 65 milligrams of the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But how much is that compared with, say, the amount of the drug in a marijuana joint? And how does Canna Cola's intoxicating effects stand up to Four Loko? According to a report by the World Health Organization, a typical marijuana joint may … [Read more...] about Pot Soda vs. Four Loko: Which is More Dangerous?
