The Tor Project announced that it’s working with Mozilla to integrate Tor into Firefox. Eventually, this should completely eliminate the need for the Tor Browser, as most of its features would be merged into Firefox’s new “super-private mode.” Tor Browser Development Largely Redundant The Tor Browser is based on the Extended Support Release (ESR) version of Firefox, because it’s a more stable development cycle that only patches bugs and doesn’t add new features for 11 months or so. This is why Mozilla has started integrating Tor’s patches into Firefox on its own through the “Tor Uplift Project.” Firefox has also adopted … [Read more...] about Project Fusion: Firefox To Enable A Tor-Based ‘Super-Private Mode’

The Tor Project has announced that it’s winding down its privacy-focused Tor Messenger chat program, nearly three years after its beta debut. Tor, an acronym of “The Onion Router,” is better known for its privacy-focused browser that directs traffic through a volunteer-run network of relays to prevent any untoward eavesdropping on users’ online activity. Indeed, the Tor Browser is often used by activists, whistleblowers, and anyone wishing to remain anonymous, and major companies — such as Facebook — have embraced Tor over the years. The people behind the anonymity network started working on Tor Messenger in early 2014, launched it in alpha a year later, before rolling out the beta version in October 2015, where it has remained since — though there has been more than 10 separate beta releases. How it worked Tor Messenger has worked in conjunction with many of the popular networks and instant messaging (IM) protocols, including ones … [Read more...] about Tor winds down its encrypted Messenger app 3 years after launch

The Italian Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC) launched its national online whistleblowing platform using Tor onion services. The move is meant to encourage whistleblowers to expose corruption and other illegal activities in organizations while protecting their identities. Tor At The Core Of Digital Whistleblowing Platforms Even though Tor has often been criticized for enabling cyber crime because of its capability to make someone anonymous on the web (much as everyone once was before intelligence agencies gained the ability to tap into and analyze the world’s internet traffic in real-time), anonymity is by itself a tool that could be used for both good and evil. In countries with more oppressive governments, anonymity may be the only thing that allows citizens to speak up against cruel and unfair leadership. Over the past few years, especially since Edward Snowden himself made use of Tor to distribute NSA documents to journalists, we’ve seen an increased use of Tor to power … [Read more...] about Italian Anti-Corruption Authority Embraces Tor For Whistleblower Protection
