Facepalm: Given Equifax's less-than-stellar history of massive data breaches, insider trading, and class-action lawsuits, one would imagine the company is very careful not to do anything that would further damage its reputation; yet here we are. The credit-reporting giant says it provided incorrect credit scores on US consumers seeking loans during a three-week period earlier this year, something it blames on a "technology coding issue." The Wall Street Journal writes that from the middle of March through early April, Equifax sent out inaccurate scores on consumers applying for auto loans, mortgages, and credit cards with banks and other lenders of varying sizes. The WSJ adds that millions of people in the US were impacted by Equifax's mistake, with some scores off by as much as 20 points in either direction. Credit scores generally range from 300 to 850; a score of 670 to 739 is considered good, 740 to 799 is very good, and 800 and over is excellent. That 20-point discrepancy … [Read more...] about Equifax sent out incorrect credit scores, blames it on “coding issue”

Yes, it’s weird for the two-year-old Meta Quest 2 to go up in price
Meta just made the surprising announcement that it will be raising the price of its Quest 2 virtual reality headsets by $100 next month. If you did a double take upon seeing that news, we commiserate — it’s weird for a two-year-old consumer tech product to suddenly go up in price. But here, the same product you could buy in September 2020 will cost 33 percent more in August 2022. The official reason Meta is upping prices is that “the costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise,” according to a company blog post credited only to the “Oculus Blog.” “By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to grow our investment in groundbreaking research and new product development that pushes the VR industry to new heights.” Prices for a lot of things we cover here at The Verge have gone up in … [Read more...] about Yes, it’s weird for the two-year-old Meta Quest 2 to go up in price

The Apple VR headset better not cost as much as five Oculus Quest 2s
Audio player loading… A new report about the rumored Apple VR headset predicts that it’ll set you back upwards of $2,000 (£1,655 / AU$2,875) – roughly five times what Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 costs. While Apple has yet to officially talk about its rumored Apple VR headset , various leaks and rumors have given us a pretty clear idea of what the device will be capable of. This standalone headset – meaning it wouldn’t run off a PC or PS5 like the Valve Index and PlayStation VR 2 – could be one of the best VR headsets ever made with a power that’s comparable to an M1-powered Mac computer . However, it’s also likely to cost as much as a MacBook, with a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (opens in new tab) saying that Apple plans to ship the headset at a price between $2,000 and $2,500 – significantly more than any previous consumer-focussed VR device. Kuo adds that because of its price Apple expects to sell fewer than 1.5 million of the headset in 2023. For … [Read more...] about The Apple VR headset better not cost as much as five Oculus Quest 2s
Rumors, delays, and early testing suggest Intel’s Arc GPUs are on shaky ground
Almost a year ago, Intel made a big announcement about its push into the dedicated graphics business. Intel Arc would be the brand name for a new batch of gaming GPUs, pushing far beyond the company's previous efforts and competing directly with Nvidia's GeForce and AMD's Radeon GPUs. Arc is the culmination of years of work, going back to at least 2017, when Intel poached AMD GPU architect Raja Koduri to run its own graphics division . And while Intel would be trying to break into an established and fiercely competitive market, it would benefit from the experience and gigantic install base that the company had cultivated with its integrated GPUs. Further Reading Intel provides more details on its Arc GPUs, which will be made by TSMC Intel sought to prove its commitment to Arc by showing off a years-long road map , with four separate named GPU architectures already in the pipeline. Sure, the GPUs wouldn't compete with top-tier GeForce and Radeon cards, but they … [Read more...] about Rumors, delays, and early testing suggest Intel’s Arc GPUs are on shaky ground

Nolte: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Sinks ‘Titanic,’ Guns for ‘Black Panther’
We reported last month Top Gun: Maverick beat Titanic’s $601 million first release haul. Now Top Gun: Maverick has topped Titanic’s total haul, including all three of its re-releases. James Cameron’s Oscar-winning classic was originally released in 1997. It was then re-released in 2012, 2017, and 2020. This boosted its lifetime domestic haul by another $60 million to $659 million . But in its first and only release, Top Gun: Maverick just jumped that $659 million by a cool three million. After 11 weeks in release, the Top Gun sequel sits at $662.5 million and counting. Worldwide is a different story. Top Gun: Maverick has earned a startling $1.35 billion. But even more startling is Titanic’s $2.2 billion worldwide take. Leftists are having a very hard time accepting the smashing success of non-woke, pro-America, masculine 'Top Gun: Maverick." https://t.co/9xVyBZec6y — Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) June 4, 2022 On the domestic front, Top Gun: … [Read more...] about Nolte: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Sinks ‘Titanic,’ Guns for ‘Black Panther’
