Antarctic Riddle: How Much Will the South Pole Melt?

August 26, 2014 by www.livescience.com Leave a Comment

One of the biggest question marks surrounding the fate of the planet’s coastlines is dangling from its underbelly. The melting of the Antarctic ice sheet has long been a relatively minor factor in the steady ascent of high-water marks, responsible for about an eighth of the 3 millimeters of annual sea-level rise. But when it comes to climate change, Antarctica is the elephantine ice sculpture in the boiler room. The ice sheet is so massive that its decline is, according to the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment , “the largest potential source” of future sea level rise. Accurately forecasting how much of it will be unleashed as seawater, and when that will happen, could help coastal communities plan for surging flood risks. A study published Aug. 14 in Earth System Dynamics — one that took more than 2 years and 50,000 computer simulations to complete, combining information from 26 atmospheric, oceanic, and ice sheet models from four polar regions — … [Read more...] about Antarctic Riddle: How Much Will the South Pole Melt?

Millions of WordPress sites receive forced auto-update to patch security flaw

February 21, 2022 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

What just happened? Last week the better part of two million WordPress sites got a forced security update because of a severe flaw in a plugin used for backing up data. The vulnerability could let unauthorized users download backups of WP sites. Last Thursday, a security update for the UpdraftPlus plugin for WordPress sites went out to address a critical vulnerability. The developers thought the flaw was urgent enough to warrant a forced update. UpdraftPlus is used to make downloading and restoring backups of WordPress sites simple. Developers at JetPack, during an internal audit of UpdraftPlus, found a vulnerability in a missing permissions check that could allow unauthorized users access to those backups. Usually, only administrators should have access to them. According to UpdraftPlus's charts, around 1.7 million sites downloaded the update on Thursday. Both JetPack and UpdraftPlus published warnings about the flaw. Sites that encrypt their backups are less at risk, … [Read more...] about Millions of WordPress sites receive forced auto-update to patch security flaw

U.S. General: Bigger NATO May Not Require More U.S. Forces in Europe

May 28, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The U.S. general nominated to take over European Command has told senators that Finland and Sweden’s push to join NATO may not require adding more U.S. ground forces into either country, but that military exercises and occasional American troop rotations will probably increase. Christopher Cavoli, who currently serves as head of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, said the increased military focus will probably continue to be on eastern Europe — where nations are more worried about potential Russian aggression and any spillover of the war on Ukraine. He said the accession of the traditionally neutral Sweden and Finland to NATO would be advantageous, not least because it would mean that “the entire [Baltic] Sea, with the exception of… a few kilometres, will be the coastline of NATO nations, which will create a very different geometry in the area” and put enormous pressure on Russia “as they sail forth from St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.” Praising Finland, in particular, for its … [Read more...] about U.S. General: Bigger NATO May Not Require More U.S. Forces in Europe
