Essential is considering its prospects for AI photography in a future smartphone based on a recent patent spotted by Android Headlines at the World Intellectual Patent Organization (WIPO). The invention is defined as both a software and hardware solution for creating 'artistic' final results in terms of both photos and videos using AI modules, specialized hardware, and standard image processing. It would also rely on the usual inclusions with a smartphone camera including a depth sensor and motion tracker, with all of the data being run through AI modules. The AI would additionally be used to partition out background photo and video data from the foreground for a more accurate blurring effect in portrait mode or to make a specified "layer" of the image pop. Finally, it would able to compensate for poor lighting, according to the patent claims. In each case, the solution would compare results from its own adjustments against deep learning data to generate an 'aesthetic score'. … [Read more...] about Essential May Finally Join The Rest Of The World, Use AI For Photography In Its Next Smartphone

The Essential Phone is getting Android 9.0 Pie on day one — just like Google’s own Pixel smartphones. Essential is rolling out the major OS update today. The company has routinely been releasing the last few Android 9 betas just hours after Google made them available, and now its one and only smartphone is getting Pie’s features months before you’ll find them on devices from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and the rest. This is a thing that just doesn’t happen nowadays. The quick rollout is due in part to Google’s work on Project Treble in Android Oreo, but clearly the Essential team has made speedy updates a priority. For a company that looks to be struggling to survive, this is pretty commendable. Essential continues to regularly deliver software improvements and optimizations to its PH-1, which can now regularly be found at a substantial discount. No, it didn’t turn out into the full-fledged iPhone and Android foe that Andy Rubin might’ve … [Read more...] about The Essential Phone is being upgraded to Android 9 Pie on the same day as Google’s Pixels
It sounds like the Essential Phone is dead. A report from Bloomberg says the smartphone startup has "cancelled" its next smartphone. The company, which was once valued at a billion dollars before ever shipping a product, is now "considering selling itself." Essential introduced itself to the public in 2017 as a new technology company founded by Andy Rubin, co-founder of Google's Android OS. Its first product was the Essential Phone, a high-end, slim bezel smartphone with a notched screen and ceramic body. The Essential Phone launched in September 2017 with a pretty bad first impression. The phone was delayed three months from its original launch window, and early customers had their private information leaked by Essential customer support, an incident Rubin called "humiliating." The phone was originally $699, but poor sales quickly led to a price drop of $200. Bloomberg says Essential sold "at least 150,000 to date, according to the person familiar with the company." … [Read more...] about Essential cancels its next smartphone, future of the company in doubt
Video: Andy Rubin's Essential Phone: modular, tough, and no logo.Essential, the smartphone from Android creator Andy Rubin, will not be making an Essential Phone 2, according to a report. Bloomberg reports that Essential is in early-stage talks to sell the company after having spent $100m, roughly a third of the funds it's raised, developing the Essential Phone PH1 and its 360-degree attachable camera module. The Essential Phone went on sale in August several weeks behind schedule and in a much more competitive market than if it had launched on time. But the phone ultimately didn't live up to expectations, given its reasonable price and the involvement of Rubin, the creator of the world's most popular OS.While praised for its design, most reviewers found the built-in camera poor and not up to par with other high-end smartphones. Essential cut the $700 price to $500 two months later after launch. The company has sold 150,000 Essential phones to date, according to Bloomberg. … [Read more...] about Essential Phone 2: Did Android founder Andy Rubin just cancel his next phone?
