Multiple vulnerabilities in Samsung SmartThings Hub could have allowed attackers to remotely monitor and control Internet of Things gadgets connected to the device.Described by Samsung as 'the brain of your smart home,' the SmartThings Hub is a single hub used to connect and control other connected devices in the home. However, security holes in the device meant that attacks could exploit the SmartThings Hub and use it to carry out unauthorised actions, including snooping through cameras, unlocking smart locks, disabling alarms, turning off devices connected to smart plugs and more. The 20 separate vulnerabilities were uncovered by vulnerability researchers at Cisco Talos. The vulnerabilities give different levels of access to the device and while researchers state "some of these might be hard to exploit" in the hands of a someone with the right technical knowledge, it's possible to combine them into a "significant attack".To succeed, attackers would have to chain together a number of … [Read more...] about Internet of Things: Samsung patches SmartThings Hub flaws

Video: Enterprise IoT projects: Key factors for successful deploymentsThe internet of things (IoT) can deliver benefits for companies in a variety of industries: Retail, healthcare, logistics/supply chain, etc. In the manufacturing sector, it's the industrial internet of things (IIoT) that's garnering lots of attention in terms of potential value.Read also: Older IoT and smart home gadgets are targets for hackers (CNET)IIoT incorporates big data/analytics and machine learning technologies to glean insights from data gathered from production equipment, products, and sensors in industrial settings. Manufacturers can use the data to discover inefficiencies, cut costs, and improve customer service. IIoT can provide better quality control, more efficient supply chains, and sustainability. One company that's banking on IIoT is Rexnord Corp., which has a Process and Motion Control (PMC) platform that designs, manufactures, and services highly engineered mechanical components used within … [Read more...] about How to leverage the industrial internet of things
The use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology is growing rapidly as more consumers and businesses recognise the benefits offered by smart devices. The range of IoT hardware available is huge, including everything from smart doorbells and connected kettles to children’s toys. What’s more, this is not only limited to smart home tech for consumers. IoT sensors are being increasingly used by businesses of all sizes across numerous industries including healthcare and manufacturing. However, despite its life-enhancing and cost-saving benefits, the IoT is a security minefield. So, is it even possible to secure the IoT? This was one of the themes discussed at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). IoT technology featured heavily at the trade show, with connected items ranging from a passenger drone to the next generation of smart city technology, and IoT security taking centre stage. One session focused on how blockchain might help to secure IoT devices in the future. … [Read more...] about Is the Internet of Things impossible to secure?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an obscure sounding name for any collective technology, even in an industry sector where jargon and buzzwords are common. To give a brief overview, the Internet of Things refers to a “collective of internet-connected consumer devices, manufacturing systems, business tools, customer service appliances, medical equipment, agricultural sensors and other things.”Many of us are now somewhat familiar with the term in the consumer space, but it has plenty of business applications too. The market is set to boom, with analysts at IDC predicting that it will be worth a whopping $7.1 trillion (£4.5tn) by 2020, up from $1.9 trillion (£1.2tn) in 2013.So what benefit does IoT offer to businesses? And are they ready for it, given that many enterprises are traditionally slow to respond to technological advances.Certainly it seems that many of the well-known technology vendors around the globe are responding to this fast- growing industry niche; … [Read more...] about Are companies ready to embrace the Internet of Things?
