If you're looking to get some sleep on the move, or to make yourself more productive by power napping, Silentmode is a $199 combination face mask and headphones set that wraps around your face. It comes with a protective carry case, a braided headphone cable and a mini USB cable -- which delightfully, works either way up in any mini USB port -- to charge up with Bluetooth. The padded mask that covers your eyes and ears is attached to the stiff outer mask with Velcro; pull it off and you can move the speakers (also attached with velcro) to sit right over your ears -- or move them out of the way if they're pressing uncomfortably against them; you can also adjust it up and down to stop it pressing down on your nose. The Bluetooth and port module sits at the back of your head and it's padded too, with a matching cushion on the other side where the mask wraps around your face. The deep hollows in the padding cushion your eyes and ears; they do a great job of blocking out light completely, … [Read more...] about Can these three gadgets help you sleep and wake better?
Sleep apnea test
I have sleep apnea. I had to take a home sleep study years ago that used a fair number of wires to determine I had apnea in the first place. But a new app could make it much easier to spot sleeping problems. SleepScore, a company co-founded by CPAP manufacturer ResMed, just released a free phone app that measures your sleep through sound waves through the phone's speaker. The app aims to help people potentially diagnose sleep problems from a bedside table, with no wrist sensors, bed sensors or extra bedside devices required.SleepScore's phone app works much like its bedside gadget, SleepScore Max, does: It sends out inaudible sound waves (basically, sonar) to measure bodily movement overnight. The app measures sleep duration, the time it takes you to fall asleep, light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep and wake time -- much like many sleep tracking fitness bands including the Fitbit Versa. It's sensitive enough to measure respiration and recognize REM (rapid eye movement) periods, … [Read more...] about SleepScore uses sonar on your phone to show you how bad your sleep is

Wearables have introduced many people to the idea of sleep tracking and taught us a bit about how to quantify our slumbers, but they typically offer little in the way of improving them. The SleepScore Max, by SleepScore Labs, endeavors to change these norms, first by nixing the need to wear anything, and secondly by creating a personalized ecosystem of products, tips, and information to raise the quality of each users sleep. Sounds enticing, we know, but you're probably curious, and maybe even a bit skeptical on how all this works.DesignThe SleepScore Max takes a two-prong approach to improving sleep: accuracy, and actionable insight. With its contactless design, the SleepScore Max sits at your bedside, using proprietary "bio-motion sensors" to track movement and respiration in a way very similar to echolocation. Though it may look like a little bedside speaker with a small camera, the device instead houses proprietary movement sensors, as well as those to measure temperature and light … [Read more...] about SleepScore Max hands-on: The best approach to sleep tracking?
