Insiders say Sony slashed PlayStation VR2 production; Sony says, “No we didn’t”

January 31, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

Rumor mill: Word on the street is that Sony's PS VR2 pre-orders were disappointing. As such, insiders say the company is allegedly cutting back production. The two million units it expected to sell in the first quarter of 2023 are now projected to take until March 2024 to move. However, Sony says these reports are false, and everything is on track. With Sony's PS VR2 only three weeks from release, Bloomberg reports that the company has cut shipments of the next-gen VR headset in half due to low pre-orders. The company previously estimated it would ship at least two million units in its launch quarter. However, anonymous sources say those sales are now projected at one million. Sony expects another 1.5 million units to ship between April this year and March 2024. Bloomberg reached out to Sony for official comment, but a spokesperson said, "the company does not discuss its product inventory." However, shortly after publishing the story, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz that it had not … [Read more...] about Insiders say Sony slashed PlayStation VR2 production; Sony says, “No we didn’t”

PS5 update means the console is catching up with Xbox Series X framerates

February 2, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… Sony has released a new beta update for the PS5 that finally brings Variable Refresh Rate to 1440p resolution on the console, and you can even apply it to ‘unsupported games’. While some of the best PS5 games can achieve 120 fps at 4K resolutions, they’re in the minority. After this update, many more will be able to hit that framerate while playing at 1440p. VRR, which dynamically scales the rendering resolution to prioritize framerate in the target resolution, was previously only available in 4K on the console. The official PlayStation blog post (opens in new tab) goes into the specifics of what the new PS5 beta firmware is able to do. As well as bringing VRR to 1440p screens, the beta activates Auto Low Latency Mode, which was previously only available in 4K. Modern screens often have in-built image processing capabilities that work to make movies and TV shows look as good as possible on your screen. However, those processes can … [Read more...] about PS5 update means the console is catching up with Xbox Series X framerates

It looks like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony will skip E3 2023

January 31, 2023 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

Audio player loading… 2023 may mark the first year ever where E3 has been without an appearance from Xbox, Sony, or Nintendo. This marks a significant moment in a gradual shift in the games industry that’s been years in the making. The E3 convention in June is often where we hear about all the upcoming games for Xbox Series X |S, Nintendo Switch , and PS5 . Whether updates on games already announced or big reveals of new titles, the show has traditionally been a fixture in the games industry’s calendar. However, IGN (opens in new tab) says it “has heard from multiple knowledgeable sources that Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo won’t be part of E3 2023 or have a presence on the Los Angeles Convention Center show floor.” We may still hear from the big three platform holders in showcases around the event, but according to the report, they won’t attend the show to make their games playable for the press or consumers. In January, Microsoft confirmed plans … [Read more...] about It looks like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony will skip E3 2023

Acura and Cadillac shine, BMW and Porsche falter at the Rolex 24

February 3, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.—With just one race on the books, it's probably too soon to declare this the dawn of a new golden era in racing, but that thought was on many minds at last weekend's spectator-packed Rolex 24 at Daytona. The grueling 24-hour race is the season-opening event for the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, and 2023 saw the introduction of a new class of hybrid prototype race cars called GTP (for Grand Touring Prototype). The crowds were heavier than ever, buoyed by the debut of the new machines, which put on a good show. And the complicated new energy-based pit stop formula didn't appear to present anyone any trouble. The same can't be said for the race itself. Twenty-four-hour racing is hard —I speak from some experience—and making it to the end should be, and is, a challenge. A 24-hour race as the first race of the year for all-new cars is even more difficult, despite the thousands of miles each car covered in testing over the past few months. As such, some feared … [Read more...] about Acura and Cadillac shine, BMW and Porsche falter at the Rolex 24

Searching Google for downloads of popular software has always come with risks, but over the past few months, it has been downright dangerous, according to researchers and a pseudorandom collection of queries. “Threat researchers are used to seeing a moderate flow of malvertising via Google Ads,” volunteers at Spamhaus wrote on Thursday . “However, over the past few days, researchers have witnessed a massive spike affecting numerous famous brands, with multiple malware being utilized. This is not ‘the norm.’” One of many new threats: MalVirt The surge is coming from numerous malware families, including AuroraStealer, IcedID , Meta Stealer, RedLine Stealer, Vidar, Formbook, and XLoader. In the past, these families typically relied on phishing and malicious spam that attached Microsoft Word documents with booby-trapped macros. Over the past month, Google Ads has become the go-to place for criminals to spread their malicious wares that are disguised as legitimate downloads by … [Read more...] about Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software

Extend Your XP Taskbar Across Multiple Monitors for Free

July 23, 2010 by www.howtogeek.com Leave a Comment

If there’s one thing we love as geeks, it’s using multiple monitors. We walk through libraries, universities and homes watching people slave away with only a single screen, and we sigh an audible sigh. The extra lolcats they could be viewing if only they maximized their efficiency. We’ve written about them before in this article , where we showed you how to make them look nice. But it seems that even we might be losing serious YouTube viewing seconds due to Windows’ restriction of the taskbar to the user’s primary monitor. This is an issue that MultiMonitor Taskbar attempts to address. Note: The free version may possibly work on Vista, but it doesn’t natively support the Vista theme. Installing MultiMonitor Taskbar To download this software for free, simply navigate to the product’s page and click on the free version in the lower right corner. Once you’ve done that, simply run the install and get yourself nice and acquainted with this little button. Follow … [Read more...] about Extend Your XP Taskbar Across Multiple Monitors for Free

apple: Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook has to say on whether the company will lay off employees or not

February 3, 2023 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Amazon has done it. So have Google, Microsoft, Intel, Twitter, Meta, Spotify and many others. You name it and almost every big tech company has done it, except one: Apple . We are talking about layoffs across the world. Apple, so far, has shied from laying off employees, even though it reported quarterly results which weren’t that great. Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked about the company taking the hard decision of laying off employees. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook said, “I view layoffs as a last resort kind of thing,” before adding, “You can never say never.” Managing and cutting costs Cook further said that Apple wants to manage costs “other ways to the degree that we can.” He also said that Apple recognises that the current environment is tough and the company is cutting costs as well. “We’re cutting hiring, we’re being very prudent and deliberate on people that we hire,” Cook said. Cook hasn’t really completely ruled out layoffs at … [Read more...] about apple: Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook has to say on whether the company will lay off employees or not

Tinder: Tinder owner to lay off 8 percent of its staff as growth falters

February 2, 2023 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Match Group Inc joined a growing list of US companies that are cutting jobs to rein in costs after it announced plans to lay off about 8 percent of its workforce, or about 200 employees, as spending on its dating apps slows. The company gave a lacklustre quarterly revenue forecast a day earlier that it blamed on a tough economy, a strong dollar, and "significant" poor product execution at Tinder . Product delays have also hit its Hinge app at a time when competition is rising from rival Bumble Inc. The job cuts were mainly in areas such as recruiting, the company said in an email. The cuts have already taken place in the United States and are being implemented in other countries. Big Tech groups disclose $10 billion in charges from job culls and cost cuts

February 3, 2023 by arstechnica.com Leave a Comment

Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft will collectively incur more than $10 billion in charges related to mass redundancies, real estate, and other cost-saving measures, as the Big Tech companies reveal the hefty price they incur to rein in spending. The US companies that have been implementing the largest job cuts in the tech sector disclosed the high costs related to their restructuring efforts in earnings statements released this week. The four groups had previously announced 50,000 job cuts to convince Wall Street they were heading into a “year of efficiency,” as Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg described it. This trend comes after more than a decade of heavy spending in a focus on aggressive top-line growth. Despite the companies’ high upfront costs such as severance payments, investors appear encouraged by the steps taken. Since formally announcing their cuts, the companies have together added more than $800 billion to their market capitalizations. Meta, the earliest … [Read more...] about Big Tech groups disclose $10 billion in charges from job culls and cost cuts
